Every Friday I like to put together a finger-foods appetizer tray with a variety of meats, cheeses, fresh fruits, crackers, dips, artisan breads, fresh veggie sticks, chips, salsa, etc. I’m always changing up the items I put on the tray to keep things fresh and interesting for our guests.

Last weekend I put together a vegan (plant-based) salami, cheese, grapes, and crackers tray. I didn’t tell my guests that I was using vegan salami because I wanted to get their honest opinion on it. Why? Because I was reviewing 3 different varieties from the great folks over at Renegade Foods.

For the review I was sent a roll from each of these 3 flavors: Smoky Soppressata (with black pepper and smoke) , Sweet Toscana (with Roasted Red Pepper and Fennel), and Spicy Chorizo (with smoked paprika and garlic). This plant-based salami is made using chef-prefected recipes and flavors that can stand on their own. The company has removed all animal-based products, but still relies on old world techniques such as smooking and fermentation.

The vegan salami is ready-to-eat right out of the package. You want to keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to use it. Each roll has a net wt. 7.5 oz. with about 4 servings per roll. You can snack on it as-is or pair it up with your favorite cheese and crackers. The company’s website will suggest wine pairings if you’re interested in that too!

I prepared my appetizer tray early on Friday afternoon, covered it and then placed it into the refrigerator to chill. On Saturday afternoon I got it out and placed it onto the table. Everyone quickly scurried over to it and were fixing their plates. Again, my guests didn’t know that I replaced the meat with vegan, plant-based salami. Within an hour…only a few lonely red grapes were left on the tray.

It was finally time to tell my guests what I did. I explained to them that this time around I used vegan salami from Renegade Foods. They were shocked! Everyone told me that they couldn’t tell a difference between the meat and meat-free version. Matter of fact, all of my guests told me that they would definitely buy and eat this plant-based salami again. Yeah! A win-win!

The only disappointment from the crowd is that I didn’t have anymore left. Seriously, I was asked to go back inside and whip up a second tray of appetizers. Geesh. Sorry folks, it was all gone!
