Today is May 31st, 2021 and it’s Memorial Day. It’s the day that we honor and mourn the military personnel that have lost their lives protecting us, our country and our freedoms. Our way of life, beliefs and values are constantly under attack. I’m grateful to our veterans (past, present and future) who protected (protect) us all.
Many people look at Memorial Day as just another holiday to get together with family & friends to have some fun. Yes, it’s nice to do that…but please remember & respect the real reason for this federal (national) holiday.
The weekend before Memorial Day we spend our time visiting some of the local cemeteries in our area to lay wreaths on veteran’s graves. Some cemeteries allow us to place small US Flags on the graves which is nice too. It’s important (at least to us) to respect them and to always remember them. It’s a tradition that my parents started doing 20+ years ago and one that I’m passing down to my own children.
We hope everyone enjoys the 3-day holiday weekend. We’ll see you on the blog tomorrow.
When I was visiting family in TN years ago I got to go to the family cemetery on Memorial Day. I learned from them what Memorial Day was. All of the family bring food and they laugh and talk about those that are no longer with us. They bring them back in their words and memories
It did seem like all the News shows did it right yesterday. Let’s take a day of squabbling off and honor and morn those that give us the privilege to live in a great land.
I put my flag out on Memorial Day. I am lucky not to have any loved ones die in the wars or in service. We need to remember and honor those who served for us.
I especially remember those kids (which they were at the time) that I knew that went to Vietnam. And never came back.
I just returned home from visiting a loved one who is buried at the VA National Cemetery and placing my flowers. It has been a heavy day for me. It was beautiful to see all the flags at all the graves and the Air Force did an F-15 flyover it filled me with pride and my eyes with tears. We are so blessed to live here. God Bless Our Troops.
We always put our flag out on Memorial Day as a way for us to honor all who served and to show how grateful we are for their sacrifice. I think your tradition of laying wreaths is lovely and thoughtful.
