I grew up living on a family farm outside of a small town in Pennsylvania. We tried to grow most of our own vegetables and fruits. Canning and food preservation was a big part of our lives, especially for the girls in my family. Back in those days, you made use of everything that you could get your hands on. If you couldn’t use it, you traded it for something else. That’s how things worked in the good old days.
Every Autumn season we look forwarded to harvesting the apples and making homemade apple cobbler, fruit crisps, dried apple rings, apple fritters, pies, fruit juice, etc. We learned to love apples at a very young age. One thing my mom always made for weeks during the season was her homemade apple crisp. You’ll find the recipe below. It’s become a family classic.
Easy Homemade Apple Crisp Recipe
6-7 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1/4 granulated sugar
1/4 cup quick-cooking oatmeal
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease bottom of baking dish with butter, set aside.
Cover the bottom of prepared baking dish with apple slices. In a mixing bowl combine together the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon and salt. Sprinkle on top of the apple slices.
Cream the brown sugar and softened butter together in a bowl. Stir in the quick-cooking oatmeal and all-purpose flour until ingredients are combined. Spread this mixture on top of apple slices.
Place baking dish in 350 degree preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until apples are fork tender. Remove and let cool. See serving suggestions above. Store all leftovers in a covered bowl in the refrigerator.

I love fruit crisps. This one looks like an easy recipe to duplicate. I love the flavors of apple, oats, and cinnamon.
Fruit crisps are my favorite dessert. I love to have apple crisp with vanilla ice cream to end a meal. Someone once told me that it is best to use 2 different varieties of apples in a crisp so that’s what I do.
I’ve made peach crisps but never apple. I like the flavors in this dish.
I have never made this before but that looks delicious. Thanks for the recipe! I pinned it!
I have never made a apple crisp or ate one before but it looks so good and easy to make. One of my aunts who passed away at 94 grew up in the time where you did all the stuff to feed your family in the winter. Ever year even after you moved to the city she would buy apples dry them on screens in back yard. Then she made fried apple pies with thee dried apples and they were so good. She always made a big batch for me when I came home for a visit.. To this day I still miss her and her apple pies.
This looks so good and sounds easy. I will be trying this recipe also. Thank you .
That looks so amazing! I love a good crisp.
