Lookout Fire Tower from WWII in Cape May

This World War II era lookout tower located in Cape May played a vital role in the Delaware Harbor Defense System during the war.  It provided coastal defense of the Delaware River and bay areas. It’s listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and not far from the world-famous Cape May Lighthouse. Both are located in Cape May Point State Park.

When visiting you’ll find a FREE parking lot that sits right across from the tower site. You can park in that parking lot and walk across the street to site. Once there…you can walk around the outside grounds for free reading the information panels which gives you some of the history of the site and surrounding area.  There are a few benches that you can sit on if you just want to sit down and enjoy the scenery.

If you want to go inside the tower you’ll have to pay an admission fee. You’ll then be allowed to climb the steps (6 floors of them) to get to the top. Along the way you can read the information panels and view photographs which gives you the history on it. Once at the top you’ll be treated to some gorgeous views of the area, the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. If you plan on going inside you’ll want to wear comfortable walking shoes. You’ll be climbing A LOT of steps!!! Cameras are welcomed.

If you enjoy seeing historical sites like this you can travel across the bay and to the Delaware side where you’ll find two more just like it. They’re a part of our American World War II history, so if you’re a WWII history buff, I think you’ll really enjoy touring both sides.

This does sound like a fun tower to see. If I feel up to it I would enjoy climbing up the stairs too.

  2. I’ve never been to Cape May (I’ve only been as south as Wildwood), but I’d love to vacation there.
