Kid’s Crafts – Monogram Puzzle Pieces Refrigerator Magnets

May 22, 2021 by Shelly

Monogram Puzzle Pieces Refrigerator MagnetsLooking for an easy craft project to teach kids about Monograms? The Alphabet? Last month we made these cute Monogram Puzzle Pieces Refrigerator Magnets with a group of young kids age 4 to 8 years of age. It was a great opportunity to teach them about Monograms and allowed them to get creative with this easy-to-make project.

You’ll need to upcycle an old cardboard puzzle as each refrigerator magnet will need four puzzle pieces. The pieces should fit tightly together with no gaps. Here’s a list of supplies that you’ll need to make them.

Monogram Puzzle Pieces Refrigerator Magnets

4 Cardboard Puzzle Pieces
Acrylic Craft Paints
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Magnets
White Craft Glue
Few Drops of Water and Plastic Dish Lid

Place four puzzle pieces together. We liked the semi-square shape that you see in the photo. Base coat the front with 2 to 3 coats of acrylic craft paint allowing 10-20 minutes of drying time between coats. Be generous with the amount of paint that you’re using. You don’t need to paint the back since you’ll be gluing a magnet on the back.

Have the child paint either their first initial or last initial or both initials onto the front of the piece. In this case…the child painted on the letter J in white. They can decorate the boarder however they like. This child added polka dots in a yellow and dark navy blue color around the perimeter. Let paint dry until no longer tacky.

Squirt a little bit of glue (white craft glue) onto a plastic dish lid or foam plate. Add 2-3 small drops of water. Stir. Use a paint brush to spread the glue mixture over-the-top of the painted design. This will dry clear and protect the painted finish from chipping or cracking. Plus, it helps to hold the puzzle pieces tightly together. It’s basically a homemade sealant.

Once everything is dry…flip it over and glue the 1-2 magnets on the back. Let dry for a few hours so that you get a strong bond before tacking them up onto the refrigerator.
