How to Buy the Best Sketch Markers for Your Next Art Project

April 18, 2021 by Sam H.

Before the rise of digital art, sketch markers were the niche tool used by many artists, graphic designers, comic creators, and more. Over time, the versatility of the markers and the wide range of color palettes it offers attracted more and more artists to it.

As they are easy to use, perfect for travel, and well-suited for sketching, doodling, and other media, alcohol-based markers like Copic markers, water-based markers, and double-ended markers are now a rage in the market.

How to Buy the Best Sketch Markers for Your Next Art Project

With so many options in hand, how do you buy a suitable sketch marker for your project?

Choose the Right Tip

Before choosing a sketch marker, you have to decide on the type of nib or kind of tip shape. The tip shape will significantly impact your coloring experience, style, and the output of your art project.
Markers with thin tips are ideal for drawing or writing, and thick-tipped markers can make thicker lines as they can deliver more ink. Different types of tips are:

* Chisel Tip
* Brush Tip
* Bullet Tip
* Fine Tip
* Double-Ended Markers

Brush Tip

Sketch markers with brush tips are one of the versatile options available in the market. This tip can be used to create thin strokes which are apt for detailed and high-precision works.

Chisel Tip

Chisel tips come with different edges, which can be used for other purposes. For example, Copic markers with chisel tips have a broad flat side which is an excellent option for filling in larger areas and laying down lots of colors, and you can use the pointy side for the thinner strokes.

Double-Ended Markers

If you want to experience the advantage of using both the brush and the chiseled tip, double-ended markers are the perfect choice for you. Alcohol-based sketch markers like Copic markers are one such example that features a central ink reservoir with tips on either side.

Water-Based or Alcohol-Based Markers

The second choice you have to make while buying a sketch marker is deciding between alcohol and water-based markers. Markers have dyes that are suspended in either alcohol or water. This difference can change everything, starting from cost to permanence and blend-ability.

Water-based sketch markers are readily available and are versatile. They do not bleed through paper much, and they are the best option for coloring books.

Alcohol-based markers, also known as permanent markers, are typically the most preferred choice of artists. They blend more predictably, smoothly and are versatile when creating tints, shades, and ombrés.

Color Range

When it comes to the color range, alcohol-based markers should be your go-to. The color range is a significant factor because, in any art project, different colors will help you achieve good tonal gradation with the blending.

Lightfastness

Over time, any form of art media will start to fade. Humidity and oxygen will gradually break down the chemical bonds of the molecules that create the color. And lightfastness is the capacity to resist fading.

To be mindful of this, prioritize alcohol-based markers while buying. They are more lightfast and contain high-quality dyes compared to other types of sketch markers.

Finally, don’t make your budget restraints stop you from choosing high-quality markers for the project. Be it chisel, brush, or bullet tip, think which suits the best for your requirement and choose the suitable marker accordingly.

    I found this article to be very interesting. I was not aware of all the differences in markers and how they can easily affect your work.
