Gardening – Getting Started Growing Our Own Grapes
Last year a friend of ours gave us their old grapevine that they no longer wanted. It’s a mature vine and was in perfect health. They dug it up, brought it to us and my husband transplanted it in one corner of our backyard. We were worried about shock, but it did just fine!
We have been backyard gardeners for the past 10+ years and now are trying our hand at growing our own concord grapes. Hubby went over to Lowe’s and purchased some wooden fencing to section off that corner for our new grapevine area and so that we can train our vines to wrap around the fence. Plus, it will some day end up being a privacy fence once.
Yesterday he planted two new 1 year old grapevines that we got at our local gardening center which was a super easy process. You don’t have to dig gigantic holes for your young vines. He followed the instructions on the package and had the job done within a few minutes.
What makes this even better is that our son-in-law Big E called us and he’s going to dig up his mature grapevine next weekend and bring it over to us. Hubby is going to plant that one (number 4 in total) along the same section of fence as our other mature one. These vines like full sun or mostly sun, so keep that in mind if you decide to plant them.
Sorry for the weird coloring in my 2 photos. It had just rained and everything looked bright green and was wet which made digging even easier! We did read that the vines like a lot of water so he set up one of our sprinklers nearby. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that everything goes well. If it does, look for another post in a few months with updated photos!
