Freelancing Foundations – 5 Things You Need to Launch a Successful Freelance Career

April 3, 2021 by Sam H.

5 Things You Need To Launch A Successful Freelance CareerMaking the choice to pursue your freelance career is as liberating as it is terrifying. It makes sense to feel a bit overwhelmed when all the freedom and all the responsibility of work falls onto your shoulders. To help you bear the brunt of self-employment, here are five important things you are going to need to launch a successful freelance career:

1. A Stimulating Work Environment

All too often, newly self-employed people begin their days in their home office or local coffee shop, expecting a full day of deep work, only to find themselves easily distracted and unproductive.

A shared workspace where freelancers and small business owners work side by side can really help you stay inspired during the early days of your career. You also have the advantage of professional meeting spaces if you need them for client pitches and a community of like-minded professionals you can learn from.

2. An Up-To-Date Website

With more free support tools available now than ever, there is no excuse for having an outdated business website (or no website at all). At the bare minimum, make sure to include your professional contact details, your unique selling points, and an accurate description of your available products or services and the prices. Your website will promote your credibility and help you attract new online customers, so you really cannot afford to have missing information. There are available resources like these wordpress guides that will help you get started when it comes to designing your website and making it an attractive and informative platform.

3. A Business Mentor

It is normal for first-time freelancers or people taking on a new business venture to feel out of their depth at times. The support of a small business mentor can be really helpful when going through periods of self-doubt or encountering new challenges.

Don’t wait until you have issues to reach out to a business coach, mentoring group or life coaching services. Schedule your first session when you are getting started. This way, you and your mentor can get to know each other and they can help you with any questions you may have about setting up your business. Getting it right from the start will mean you can manage with confidence later.

4. Tax Help

Hiring a dedicated tax accountant to take care of this side of things could be really helpful for you, but it may not be an ongoing necessity. You might find it easy to stay on top of your own taxes if your business is pretty minimal when it comes to expenses, assets, and liabilities, or you really enjoy bookkeeping.

Either way, it is worth consulting with an accountant or tax expert in your first year so that you can understand the financial and tax implications of operating your business. You will also have the opportunity to confirm all your accounts are accurately instated and get the right answers to any potential questions. Are wages of freelancers can be garnished? Find it out at Daily Prosper.

5. Adequate Insurance

Your insurance needs will differ depending on the nature of your business, but you cannot overlook this topic altogether. As a self-employed person, you are solely responsible for all insurance, expenses, and savings associated with your work. If you use a computer, vehicles, equipment or any other tangible items to operate your business, then you should consider insuring them. Likewise, taking care of yourself as a freelancer should be a priority too, so make sure to organize your health insurance and a pension plan now.

These five steps are just the beginning – you have a great journey ahead of you as a new freelancer! Be kind to yourself and don’t be afraid to occasionally make mistakes. What every business owner knows but doesn’t advertise is that you learn a lot through trial and error!
