If you’ve been reading this blog for the past 10+ years you’ll already know that I enjoy venting or letting off some steam from time time on the blog. Well, wait no more…time for another Shelly vent post!!!
Late last year I spent a total of 4 1/2 weeks in a local hospital having emergency surgery for a broken arm and hand. Along with that came a lot of complications, way too many to even discuss today. I first had admission #1 which lasted for 2 1/2 weeks, home for a few weeks and back in for an additional 2 weeks.
Over that period of time I lost 12 lbs. Don’t get me wrong, I could stand to lose a few pounds but I didn’t want to lose the weight the way that I did. Let’s talk about disgusting but yet edible hospital food. Oh my geeesh! I think a 5th grader could cook better than half the crap sent up to my room.
The cold sandwiches always were soggy, hot sandwiches tasted like cardboard, nothing had any flavor, grease galore and well…most menu items weren’t to my liking at all. I’m not that much of a picky eater but dang it….flavor please!!!
On top of that I’m a big fresh fruit eater. I ordered a piece of fresh fruit with almost every meal. Well, the fruit flies outnumbered patients….I kid you not! I quit ordering fresh fruit after a week because I couldn’t stand the onslaught of fruit flies that seemed to find their way into my room. Ugh.
Check out my one lunch tray above. I got diet iced tea, a burger, a small cup of chocolate ice cream and that was about it. No condiments to speak of. I was able to get down 1/2 of my burger and ate my ice cream which was pre-packaged. Even the diet iced tea tasted like cardboard that it came in.
When I go to the hospital I know I’m not going to be dining at a 5 star gourmet restaurant but dang it… give patients better choices and we want some flavor to them! Not everything needs to be bland unless your health condition requires it. Just saying! That’s my vent for today!
I am sorry that you had such horrible food at the hospital. The food that I had when I was in the hospital was not great, but nothing as disgusting as you described.
I don’t recall the food being all that good the last time I was in the hospital but thankfully it was no where near as bad as your experience. Does seem like they could do a better job.
I think it is a unwritten rule that hospital food has to taste bad. You have heard the joke about the green jello being the only thing worth eating. Maybe it is that way so you don’t want to stay long 🙂
It’s bad alright. For some reason it’s gotten worse over the years. At least my hubby can bring in food with him once a day when he comes in there.
Just the title of this alone made me open this post. I know you have been through a lot. Hospital good is not usually good but this sounds disguting!
