Last week I was at the grocery store and they had packages of cookie mix on sale. It was such a great price that I purchased two packs to keep on hand when I needed them. Normally I bake our cookies from scratch, but every once in awhile I get pressed for time and will use a pre-packaged mix.
For the purpose of my RANT today I won’t mention the “brand” of cookie mix that I purchased but let me say this…it sucked! Royally, sucked!
On the package it stated to bake at 375 degrees F for approximately 8 to 11 minutes. Well, that’s falsehood number one. Way too high of temperature.
The second falsehood stated on the package said to place them on an ungreased baking sheet. Okay, I normally spray my baking sheets with a little bit of non-stick spray. I listed to the package directions and used none.
Oh, while I’m at it. There’s nothing wrong with my 2 year old oven! My hubby works on appliances for a living. After this fiasco he put his probe in the oven to take the temperature and it read 369 degrees F. It was actually 6 degrees shy of the 375 degrees printed on the package.
Well, after only 5 minutes of baking time my cookies were burnt! Yes, burnt! Not only were they burnt I had to practically jackhammer them off of the baking sheets. Two baking sheets totally ruined and into the trash can. Oh my gosh!
Needless to say, I fired off an email to the corporate headquarters for that particular brand as their package instructions are a mess! I’m an experienced baker and I know what I’m doing. The temp is way too high, the baking sheets need to be lightly greased and they definitely shouldn’t sit in the oven for 8-11 minutes when mine were burnt to a crisp at 5 minutes!!! WTH!!!
I certainly won’t be buying their pre-packaged cookie baking mixes again. Back to making our homemade cookies from scratch!

What a horrible experience! Although I pay attention to directions I am always cautious when the directions are different from the ones I usually follow. To have burnt after onlhy 5 minjutes shows how wron the directions were.
Eek! Hopefully corporate pays heed to your experience.
Losing the cookie sheets would be the straw that broke the camels back for me. That would tick me off. Now I remember why I do not bake cookies much!
Oh I was so pissed! I keep my bakeware looking nice! At first I thought something was wrong with my oven but hubby checked the temp with his probe and it was fine! I think their instructions on the package are very messed up!!!
I would be chapped if this happened to me. They should reimburse you for your cookies sheets that were ruined. I hope I avoid buying their product I will keep these baking instructions in my mind and if I ever see them I will return the box. This would have totally happened to me because I would have followed the directions too. I am glad you contacted the company.
Oh trust me, I’m chapped about it alright! I still haven’t heard back from them. I’ll give it a few days and if I don’t hear anything I’ll call their toll-free corporate hotline. Totally ridiculous what happened. Since I don’t want to mention the “brand” I will say that the flavor was chocolate cookies with chocolate chunks.
Wow. What a disappointment and an ugly mess. I would think that you could count on the directions to at least give you half way decent cookies. These aren’t even close. I did wonder when I looked at the picture and before I saw the title what was on the plate. Your recipes and dishes always look so delicious and wonderful and these did not. Definitely a brand to avoid.
Oh goodness, what a mess. There are a couple of cookie mixes I will let the girls use to bake when they visit. I have tried them and know they work. You have convinced me to stay with the tried and true or homemade. I know from your posts… your homemade are always better.
I tried soaking the cookies off of baking sheet #2 and that was a no-go. I can’t tell you how hard they were! It was a terrible mess. I bet I’m not the only one that is complaining about it as I followed the instructions step-by-step. You only add 3 ingredients to their mix: oil, water and 1 egg. So, it’s really something that a person can’t mess up. Just their instructions are totally wrong!
When in doubt, use parchment paper.
I would write them an email about that problem.
OUCH! That was not a good experience. I am not an experienced baker so I would have followed the directions and burnt them in record time.
