When popping open a new jar of canned food you’ll want to be careful to not bend up that flat mason jar seal (lid). Once it’s off the jar you’ll want to hand wash and dry it. If it’s slightly bent you can sit it underneath a heavy object to help straighten it. However, 95% of the time mine come off my jars flat as a piece of paper!

Used Mason Jar Lids (seals)
Acrylic Craft Paint in Red and Black
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Acrylic Craft Paint Pens in Light Pink, Black and White
Hole Punch
Ribbon
Scissors
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy or Matte Finish
Sheet of Aluminum Foil

I used a metal hole punch to punch out the circle at the top of my lid. If you don’t have one you can use a hammer and nail to punch through a hole. This hole will be used to hang the ornament.

Paint the entire top of the lid with red acrylic paint. I had to use 2 heavy coats to get the coverage that I wanted. Let completely dry. Using black acrylic paint you’ll want to make the head. Again, I had to use 2 heavy coats. Let dry.

For the rest of the painting we used acrylic paint pens. Dotted on little light pink polka dots between the head & back. Used the black paint pen to add the polka dots to the body. Used the white paint pen to add the eyes and mouth. Let them dry for 30 minutes and then dot on the black inner eye. Let the entire thing dry for 2-3 hours or until the paint is no longer tacky.

Take your mason jar lids outside and lay them on a piece of aluminum foil. Lightly spray 1-2 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer over the top, allowing 30 minutes to pass between coats. We used a sealer with a glossy finish. Let dry.

Cut a piece of sheer organza red ribbon that measures 1/4″ by 7″ in length. Thread it through the hanging hole and knot the two ends together. Trim the ends. That’s it, you’re done!
