Common Issues with Your Gutter System and How to Fix Them

February 25, 2021 by Sam H.

Issues with your guttering system can be a nightmare, especially in the colder months when it is harder to get up onto your roof and repair them yourself. Because of the difficulty, some may have with getting onto the roof and repairing one’s gutter, we recommend that you hire repairmen and specialists to do it for you. Clambering around on the roof on a frosty winter’s day is not something we would recommend. Even so, we will tell you how you can fix simple issues on this page today.

Yes, in this article, we are going to tell you about a few common issues that you may have with your gutter system, but that you can fix quite easily. We hope you will enjoy this page and that you benefit from it – if you do please leave a comment down below.

Common Issues with Your Gutter System and How to Fix Them

Here are a few common issues with your gutter system and how you can fix them.

Leaks

Leaks are by far the most common issue homeowners experience with their gutters. We have all at one time experienced a leak with our gutters and it can definitely be an absolute nightmare. Leaks must be addressed, for they can cause flooding, water getting into the walls of your home, and puddles forming on the ground and in your garden and front lawn. Leaks can generally be repaired by filling them in or covering them – though you may need a total gutter replacement, which according to Aboveallguttervac.com, may be your best option. Leaks must be treated immediately.

Joint Separation

If you find that your gutters are pulling away from one another, which can happen, and often does happen, there is an easy solution. A joint separation is generally caused by clogs and debris forming and accumulating in your gutter. The joints of a gutter are vulnerable and can become separated due to the weight of the clogs and debris in the gutter, or because of water pooling up. However, glue or caulk will not suffice in reattaching the gutters. Instead, you will need to use rivets and will have to drill holes in the overlapping sections, securing them with the rivets.

Slope

The slope of a gutter is seldom thought of by homeowners who are installing or managing their own gutters. Unfortunate for them, a gutter’s slope is an absolutely essential part of its maintenance and installation. A gutter can only function when it has a proper slope. Slope refers to the pitch or slant of a gutter – the way that it curves downwards to direct the water. If you do not ensure your slope is at the right angle, water can begin to pool up. You will generally want your slope to be ¼ of an inch per every 10 feet of gutter.

Growth

If you don’t regularly clean your gutter, you may find a garden inside it. Gutter growth is quite common among homeowners who do not make a concerted effort to clean and tend to their gutters. You must always check up on, maintain, and clean your gutters to avoid this. Growth in your gutter can lead to blockages, breakages, and can lead to the gutter becoming too heavy and being weighed down. Growth in your gutters should always be dealt with.

Clogged Gutters

Clogged gutters occur quite frequently and can be an absolute nightmare. Thankfully, however, you can buy pieces of equipment that you insert in the gutter from the ground up that push and drive all of the dirt out of your gutter, so that it can run smoothly. You can avoid clogged and blocked gutters by simply cleaning them regularly. Many people do not like to clean their gutters, which usually leads to much bigger problems, such as clogged and blocked gutters, which you may need to hire a specialist to come and repair for you if you cannot do it.

Ice

Ice on your gutters can be a nightmare and can break your gutters. If you notice shards of ice growing off of your gutters, you must contact a gutter specialist to come and repair your gutters for you. If you leave this unattended, your gutters can degrade, break, and falling ice can potentially injure people. Ice growth on your gutters is sometimes unavoidable, especially in the winter months, but it should not be ignored. Please make sure that you have a specialist come out and look at ice growth on your gutters if there is a disproportionate amount of it.

Gutters are a very important part of our home. They keep water away and keep our attics and roofs nice and dry. If you do not look after your gutter, your home can develop a number of problems. We hope that you, after this page, will begin to look after your gutters.
