We love Texas Toast and you’ll always find a box of it in our freezer. While we like it as-is..we like it EVEN MORE when we “doctor” it up with a few extra toppings! During the summertime when we’re harvesting fresh veggies from our garden I will often slice them up and toss them onto our Texas Toast before baking.
Great Toppings to Add: finely chopped onions, sliced or chopped bell peppers, chopped or sliced hot peppers, sliced tomatoes, finely chopped broccoli or cauliflower, etc. We will also toss on additional shredded cheese (whatever I currently have in the refrigerator) along with some oregano.
It’s a great way to use up some of your freshly harvested or leftover veggies and it definitely makes Texas Toast more flavorful. You can choose to add whatever you like…just slice it thin or finely chop so that it doesn’t add a lot of additional baking time. On average I bake our slices just an additional 1 to 2 minutes and that’s it.

I know that my family would love this recipe. I could make it for lunch every day , perhaps with some variations.
So true most people do have the texas toast in their freezer. This looks and sound so good and I never would have thought about adding to the toast. In the winter this is perfect with those tomatos that don’t really taste so good. It would make the tomatoes so much sweeter.
I like this idea. We almost always have the garlic version but I never thought about adding toppings!
Sounds Delicious!! I love Texas Toast! I appreciate the tip…Have a Great Day.. :0)
I could eat this for lunch everyday and do a different topping for variety. I like the idea of fresh tomatoes and for myself I would add some fresh basil.
This looks like a meal in itself. I would love to have some. Thank you for the idea.
I love fresh tomatoes on bread. It’s been a treat since I was a kid.
Oh, great ideas. I think my family would love hot peppers and cheese and fresh tomatoes during the summer.
