How to Maintain Your Grill During the Winter

January 7, 2021 by Sam H.

Grilling is a favorite pastime for many, but most people only grill during the warm summer months when the weather is more suitable to have barbecues. Lack of utilization during the winter months can cause your grill to become rusty, worn out, and dirty, and therefore, not fit for use when the next summer barbecuing season rolls around. So how should you correctly maintain your grill during the winter? Read on for some tips and tricks on how to keep your grill in tip-top shape during the cold winter months.

How To Maintain Your Grill During The Winter

Protect It

The first thing to do to maintain your grill during winter is to make sure it’s properly protected. Take your grill apart by removing all the grilling plates and the grease tray at the bottom of the grill. Afterward, you should protect the metal parts of the grill by spraying them with cooking oil to prepare them for winter storage. This prevents the grill from rusting by limiting corrosion. The oil will also be easily removed from your grill with your next use when you fire it up. However, don’t use too much oil to the degree that the oil drips or pools on the plates. Simply spraying your grill with enough oil to give it a light glaze is enough to offer the most optimum protection!

Clean It

Perhaps the most important thing to do is to give your grill a proper deep cleaning. This deep cleaning helps to keep your grill in stellar condition and also prevents any potential health concerns from food cooked on the grill. The experts at Grill Tanks Plus state that a grill that is poorly maintained can lead to numerous technical issues and can also pose health risks. Food that is cooked on a dirty grill with char piles on the cooking grates can lead to the development of cancerous substances that attach to the food. This is why the most crucial cleaning needs to be done on your cooking grates. However, this cleaning must be done with care as there are many intersections on the metal of the grates where char can be stored and builds up over time if they are not cleaned properly. A relatively easy way to clean the grates is by using a powered wire wheel, but you have to be careful that the bristles don’t come off when using it. Also, you must make sure to thoroughly dry your grill after cleaning.

Properly Store It

After cleaning and making sure your grill is fully protected, the final step is properly storing your grill. The next step in storing your grill is coating your burner unit in a suitable cover to prevent insects from crawling in during the cold months. If you are storing your grill outdoors, you should keep your grill connected to the propane gas source but make sure it is switched off. However, if you decide to store it indoors, you must disconnect your grill from the propane tank and leave the tank completely outside. This is because storing it indoors, even in a shed or garage, can cause a gas leak which can lead to a giant explosion. Instead, leave the oil tank outside and then move the grill inside separately.

It is essential to give your grill a little bit of extra care to prepare it for the winter months. From protecting your grill by spraying it with cooking oils, cleaning it properly, and storing it in the correct way whether indoors or outdoors, these little tricks can make sure your favorite grill stays in the best possible condition so that when summer comes around again, it is ready for use.
