Ah—you’ve done it. You’re in a new home.
It’s easy to sprawl out and relax after just moving into your new home, whether you’ve gone for something like one of these brand new homes in Mechanicsburg PA or something that has previously been lived in, but you’ve still got work to do. Although the brunt of the workload is finished, you’re not done with the process just yet.
Let’s take a look at the best ways to get your home organized after a move.
Give Your Home a Deep Clean
Take advantage of having an empty home without furniture by performing a deep clean on your home. Whether it looks clean already or not, having a full-on cleaning session will ensure all the nooks and crannies are cleaned to give you a proper fresh start in your new space.
A deep clean is also a great time to sanitize, especially during the pandemic.
Put your focus on areas that will be hard to reach when furniture is placed and drawers are filled.
Unpack Your Essentials
Unpacking is daunting. To make this process easier, start with your “essential” marked boxes. This should include things you will use first and most, like kitchen items, bathroom supplies, and bedding.
Unpacking your necessities first will not only help you get organized right off the bat, but it can also make your first few nights easier. You’ll already feel accomplished by unpacking the essentials.
Start With One Room at a Time
After you’ve got your essentials unpacked, start with your child’s room and the smallest rooms. The faster your kids can entertain themselves, the faster they are out of your way while you unpack and organize.
When you start setting up smaller rooms first, you don’t get burned out early in the process. You’ll get a morale boost and mark a check off your list after you finish setting up each room.
Designate Areas for Your Items
As you’re unpacking, you may have moved boxes and items into their designated rooms, but if not, this is the time to sort things out.
First, set a designated area for your cords and electronics. The best place for this is usually near the family TV area.
Next, create a space for blankets, towels, and spare bedding. Similar linens should be kept together (ideally in one closet).
After that, you can start setting up an area for guests and family to store coats and shoes. If you have a coat closet near your front door or garage, that would be the perfect placement. If not, you can add hooks and a small shoe rack near the door, so dirt and germs don’t get spread throughout your new, clean home.
As odd as it may sound, create a “junk drawer,” closet, or bin for miscellaneous items. This will happen naturally over time, so designating this space from the beginning will help keep the clutter together. Try to keep this area as small as possible. If you have enough junk to take up a large amount of space that you don’t have room for, you should consider getting rid of some of it.
Store seasonal or rarely used items like holiday decorations in labeled boxes and place them in your attic or garage. There is no reason to have these boxes on display.
Set Up Your Furniture
Now that all your items have a designated space and you’ve unpacked, it’s time to put the finishing touches on your new home—setting up your new furniture and hanging your decor.
If you moved with your family, try to include everyone in the decorating process so they feel invested in the space and feel comfortable calling it home. On the other hand, if you made the move on your own, now is the time to show your personality and set up your space exactly as you want it. Whether you’re going for a new aesthetic or keeping the same vibe you had in your old home, now is the time to show your personality.
When decorating and setting up furniture, make sure to give your visitors adequate space to walk through your home without feeling cramped or potentially knocking something over.
Don’t be afraid to move your furniture around from time to time to get your setup perfectly aligned with your preferences. The placement of furniture and the decor you choose now is not set in stone; you can move things around and rearrange your decor until everything fits perfectly.
Stay Organized After a Move
Starting out in your new home on the right foot can make all the difference. Now is the time to unpack, find places for your items, and decorate your new home in any way you’d like. By starting off organized and keeping these best practices in place, you’ll have a tidy and happy home.
I can’t wait to move. I am going to keep this all in mind 🙂
I wish had had all of this information after we moved. There is still so much to do. but as you said I need to take one room or section at a time.
