How to Create More Defined Spaces in Your Living Room

January 28, 2021 by Sam H.

How to Create More Defined Spaces in Your Living RoomDoes it ever feel like your living room is simply a multi-purpose space with no clear definition to it? This can happen when you are using your living room for multiple things throughout the week, such as a home office as well as a lounging space. While there is nothing wrong with this idea in principle, it can create a fairly chaotic scene unless you have specifically broken up the space to accommodate its various uses.

Once you have taken the right steps to create more defined spaces in your living room, you will be able to sit down to any task without feeling overwhelmed by a cluttered and untidy room. Thankfully, this process isn’t complicated and can be accomplished in very little time.

If you are looking to create more clearly defined spaces in your living room so that it can better accommodate the many things that you need to use it for, here are a few ideas for you to consider.

Start with the Furniture

First and foremost, your furniture is going to play one of the more significant roles in your ability to create clearly defined spaces in your living room. Both the nature and layout of the furniture that you have is going to be important to address. You might already have the right pieces at your disposal, but don’t have them placed in the most ideal manner.

There are some types of furniture pieces that are going to be more conducive to breaking up a space naturally. For instance, a modular sofa is perfectly tailored to this task. You can easily use one edge of a modular sofa as an additional wall of sorts that can help to separate your lounging space from your work or dining space.

If you are looking to designate a certain portion of your living room for a new purpose, make sure that all of the furniture is aligned properly. You want your TV to be aligned adequately with your seating so that it feels like its own lounging space.

Use Minor Details to Solidify Different Spaces

Aside from the big-ticket items like your furniture pieces, the minor design details in the space can go a long way to helping you break up your living room better as well. A rug that is well placed and of the right size can instantly create more definition between a lounging space and a workspace.

The pictures and other things that you have hanging on your walls can also help you achieve more definition as well. By aligning your wall adornments with your sofa, you can make for a more solidified lounge space. Floating shelves can also be a great way to break up a space and allow for a clearer definition.

In the end, it is important to bear in mind that you only have so much space to work with. There are ways to utilize even the smallest of spaces to the best advantage, including clearly defining spaces based on how you wish to use them.
