Craft Project – Coffee Mug Holder Made from Pallet Wood

Craft Project - Coffee Mug Holder Made from Pallet WoodMy husband gets a lot of wooden pallets from his place of business. He saves the pallets and tears them a part to use the perfectly fine wood in various craft projects that he enjoys making. The project we’re featuring today was made in just one weekend. It was made for our daughter who wanted more cabinet space in her a kitchen and wanted to hang her coffee mugs up on the wall above her coffee bar.

Pallet Wood comes in various widths and lengths. You’ll need to decide how long and wide you want your coffee mug holder to be. He used six pieces of pallet wood (various widths) which he cut down to all be the same length. After you get them cut down you’ll want to sand all sides and edges until smooth. He used wood stain (2 coats) and left them dry before applying a wax coating. If you don’t want to deal with the wax you can use an acrylic spray sealer (2-3 coats) and let it thoroughly dry.

He then assembled the 6 pieces together with nails and wood glue being careful to not use too much glue. You don’t want it oozing out between your boards. If you do, immediately wipe clean with a tack cloth. Let dry.

While it was drying he cut down some pine wood trim leftover from another project to frame everything out. Make sure you angle up your ends and fit them together like a picture frame. Stain them with wood stain and then add the wax finish. Let dry. He used small nails and wood glue to attach it around the perimeter. Let dry.

At the local craft store he purchased wood letters to spell out the word COFFEE and painted them a dark brown color. He sprayed an acrylic sealer on top to protect the painted finish. Once they were dry he used wood glue to attach them down the center of the mug rack. Let dry.

Our daughter wanted 6 metal hooks placed onto it which he purchased from our local home supply store in a bronze finish. They were attached using screws that came along in the package. Make sure you space out your hooks far enough to hold a coffee mug.

On the back he added two saw-tooth hangers so that she can hang it up on the wall in her kitchen above her small coffee bar. That gets 6 full-size coffee mugs out of her kitchen cabinet and frees up space. Plus, they can just grab a mug quickly when brewing a cup of coffee. I think it turned out nicely!
