Every year on December 1st I like to start my holiday baking. I will start off the season by making a batch or two of homemade Christmas cookies. My family loves sugar cookies and my granddaughter enjoys helping me make them. Just like any kid…her favorite part is decorating them!

When it comes to making sugar cookies I’ll make them both ways…as cut-outs in fun holiday shapes and by dropping them onto the sheet like today’s recipe. Drop cookies are really nice for those who are limited on time and don’t want to spend several hours baking.
You can make these cookies and leave them plain or decorate the tops with sprinkles and/or colored sugar. See below the recipe for instructions on adding the cookie toppings. YUMMY good!
Easy Drop Sugar Cookies Recipe
1 cup butter, softened (not margarine)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until creamy and smooth. Add in the large egg, beat until fluffy. Stir in the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt and ground cinnamon until well blended. Form dough into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap or place into a large zipper-close gallon-sized bag. Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Separate the dough into manageable portions. Drop dough onto lightly greased baking sheets using a tablespoon. Use the back of a spoon to flatten the cookie dough. Try to make all of your cookies the same size and shape. This will help to keep things even during the baking process.
Bake for 7-8 minutes or until they are lightly browned. Let cookies stand on cookie sheet for 1-2 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool. Store in an airtight container.
Decorating: If you want to decorate the cookies with sprinkles, candies and colored sugars…you need to remove the cookies from the oven 1 minute early. I like to make an egg white wash (place an egg white into a measuring cup…whip it with a fork). Use a spoon to spread a little bit of the egg white on top of each cookie. Place sprinkles or colored sugar on top. Place baking sheet back into the oven for 1 minute. Remove. Place cookies on a wire rack to cool.

I am always looking for new cookie recipes. Thanks for the tip on how to get the sprinkles to stick.
I love sugar cookies. They are my favorite Christmas cookie.
One of our Christmas traditions is baking a ton of these cookies and decorating them together around the kitchen table. I love to give these out to friends, family and neighbors in colorful holiday tins.
Easy and simple recipe which are the ones I like the best. Sugar cookies are a favorite since they are fun to have my grandchildren help decorate.
The girls will love making these. I wish they were here but I can see them on Facetime making them in their home. Thank you for the recipe.
These cookies look so good, I am not a baker but if I was. A friend starts her baking in Nov and freezes most of them. People don’t bake as much as they used to and I miss it.
Those are pretty simple and look festive. Thanks for telling how to get the sprinkles to stay on.
