Craft Project: Primitive Country Wood Snowman
A friend of mine decorates her home in the country and primitive style. A lot of her home decor items she has personally made. She’s a big fan of handcrafted and homemade items. I have to admit…her decorating style is pretty cute.

Last weekend I decided to make her a primitive country snowman out of wood. My husband has a lot of pine wood scraps laying around, so that’s what I used. I was able to make him in one afternoon.
Primitive Country Wood Snowman
3/4″ to 1″ thick pine wood (snowman)
sand paper
1/8″ to 1/4″ thick pine wood (heart)
10″ by 1/2″ piece of cotton homespun (scarf)
rusty square-head nail
acrylic craft paint: buttercream, mauve, dark red
paint brush, paper towels, water dish
saw
6″ piece metal florist wire
black fine point paint pen
Pattern: I made my own by free-handing a basic snowman shape onto paper and then cutting it out. My guy stands approximately 8″ tall by 5″ wide at his widest point. You can make him as chubby or as slender as you would like. I did the same thing for the heart.
I traced my two shapes (snowman and heart) onto two different pieces of pine wood using a pencil. I’m not great with power tools so I had my husband cut out both shapes. I then used his sander and some sand paper to smooth them down. I opted to make rounded and smooth edges around the snowman shape.
Using buttercream colored acrylic craft paint I gave the snowman two base coasts of paint, allowing each coat to dry for 30 minutes before applying the next coat. Once paint was fully dry I used some fine grade sandpaper to rough him up a bit to give him that worn & tattered primitive look.
While he was drying I used dark red acrylic craft paint to paint one side of the heart and around the edges. I left the back unpainted so that I would get better adhesion once I glued it onto his body. Let dry.
Use a fine point black paint pen to dot on two eyes. Use a hammer to add the nail to serve as his nose. Use mauve colored paint to add the rosy cheeks. Use the black paint pen to write the words “Let It Snow” on his body…off centered so that you allow room for the heart on the other side. Glue on heart. Tie cotton homespun around his neck to serve as the scarf.
To finish up you’ll want to cut a 6″ piece of florist wire and twist it into a loop fastening the two ends together. Use glue to adhere it onto the back of your snowman. Let dry. That’s it!!!
