Amish Horse and Buggy in Western Pennsylvania
During the 1700’s the Amish fled Europe due to religious persecution. You can find the Amish living in 18 states across America and in Canada. Here in Pennsylvania the majority of the Amish speak Pennsylvania German, also called Pennsylvania Dutch.
When people think of the Amish in Pennsylvania they typically think of the large Amish community in Lancaster County. However, you’ll find them all throughout the Keystone state with a large community of them located in Lawrence County in western Pennsylvania.
Each community is different with their own rules and guidelines. In western PA you’ll find a strict old order Amish group in the New Wilmington and Volant areas. I believe its the third or fourth largest community in the country.
One of the things we noticed while visiting New Wilmington was that all of the Amish horse and buggies were painted a different color than those we see frequently down in Lancaster County. The ones in western Pennsylvania are painted a burnt orange and black color. Most had fully enclosed riding compartments but we did see a few open-top ones too. Yes, even during wintertime!
Today I wanted to share a photo of one of the Amish Horse and Buggies that we saw in Lawrence Pennsylvania. They’re not an everyday thing where we live so this one really caught our eye. Have you ever seen one? Do you have an Amish community near you?
