Batter Dipped Onion Rings Recipe with Freezing Tips

November 26, 2020 by Shelly

Batter Dipped Onion Rings RecipeMy family loves homemade onion rings but they’re very picky about the ones that they’ll eat. They don’t care for breaded onion rings and they don’t like them soggy. They have to be crisp and crunchy. A few years ago I started making homemade onion rings because I got tired of paying high prices at the grocery store. They’re super-easy to make.

First I’m going to give you the recipe and then I’ll provide you with freezing and baking tips. If you love o-rings you’re going to love this simple recipe.

Batter Dipped Onion Rings Recipe

4-6 large onions
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 Tbsp. vegetable oil
3/4 tsp. salt
vegetable oil for deep frying

Peel skin off onion. Slice and separate into rings. Set aside.

In a small mixing bowl combine together the beaten eggs, milk, all-purpose flour, vegetable oil, and salt. Dip onion rings into batter, letting excess drip off into the bowl. The slice should be covered on all sides with the batter.

Pour vegetable oil into a large pan or deep fryer. Turn the heat on high until you see little bubbles and steam. Turn heat down to medium-high. Use tongs to place onion rings into the hot oil. Fry for 3-6 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove slices and place on a plate lined with several paper towels for 2-4 minutes to allow oil to drain. Serve immediately.

how to freeze homemade onion rings

Freezing Instructions:

Let onion rings completely cool to room temperature. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place in freezer for 30-45 minutes. Remove and place slices into freezer bags. Label bags and freeze for up to one year. I place my bags flat in the freezer to save on storage space. It’s just the two of us so I like to use quart size bags whereas my daughter uses gallon size bags…enough to feed her family of four.

Reheating Instructions:

You can bake them in a 350 degree oven for 5-8 minutes or in your toaster oven for 4-7 minutes. Remove, serve immediately. Don’t reheat in your microwave oven.

I bet these are really tasty. I like onion rings but often find the store bought ones too salty so I should try making them myself.

Freeze them? What a wonderful concept! I love onion rings, but they’re so much trouble I don’t do it very often. Now I can cook a big batch and have them when I want them. Thank you very much.
