Kid’s STEM Project: Baking Soda Fizzy Rocks

Kid's STEM Project: Baking Soda Fizzy RocksI’m homeschooling my 11 year old daughter for the entire school year and always looking for new STEM projects for her to complete. A few weeks ago we came across the Baking Soda Fizzy Rocks project which she really enjoyed. This project is best for children ages 8 and up with adult supervision. It will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Kid’s STEM Project – Baking Soda Fizzy Rocks

3 Tbsp. Baking Soda
1 tsp. Water
Food Coloring
1/4 cup White Vinegar
Glass Baking Dish
Measuring Spoons
Measuring Cup
Small Bowl
Old Towel (to protect work surface)

In a small bowl combine together the baking soda and water. Make sure you use measuring spoons to measure out your ingredients as you need to be accurate with this project. Use a spoon or your hands to form mixture into a dough-like consistency.

We separated our dough into 4 piles and added 1-2 drops of food coloring to each one. Use hands to work the food coloring through the dough. Form each pile into a rock shape and place them into a glass baking dish. We opted to wait 15-20 minutes to allow our baking soda rocks to harden up just a little bit.

Once you’re ready pour a 1/4 cup of white vinegar into a measuring cup. Have the child slowly pour the vinegar over the baking soda rocks and watch them fizz! They look like bath bombs but aren’t in a tub of water!

My Thoughts: This project helps to teach children how to read a recipe/instructions and to follow the steps outlined to complete a project. It teaches them measuring skills with the measuring spoons & cups. They will learn about “cause and reaction” by completing this simple STEM project.
