How to Blanch and Remove Skins from Tomatoes

Blanching Tomatoes to Make Homemade Sauce

I enjoy making homemade tomato sauce, tomato-based soups, salsas, etc. One thing that you need to do when making any of those recipes is to blanch and remove the skins from your tomatoes. It’s a very easy process and will take less than 45 minutes to complete. (time varies according to how many tomatoes that your doing).

How to Blanch and Remove Skins from Tomatoes

Tomatoes
Water
Large Cooking Pot
Paring Knife
Colander
Large Bowl
Cutting Board

Fill a large cooking pot with hot water. Place it on the stove over medium-high heat.

Wash tomatoes under running water to remove dirt and debris. Use a paring knife to cut out the stem area. Place into a bowl as you continue to do all of your tomatoes. Once done…gently place them into your pot of boiling water and boil for 3-4 minutes. You will know that they’re done when you see the skins start to crack and wrinkle-up. Turn off the heat.

Place a large bowl into your kitchen sink filled halfway with cold water and several ice cubes. Place your colander on top. Carefully pour the tomatoes into the colander while the cold water is running from your faucet. You need to quickly cool them down to stop the cooking process. Keep running the water until they are completely cool.

I like to place them onto my cutting board to remove the skins which should easily peel off. You can put the skins in your compost pile. Gently rinse away some of the seeds. Depending on the recipe that you’re making you’ll want to half, quarter, dice or slice up the tomatoes. That’s it, a very easy process!
