For the past few months we’ve been exploring the area within a 2 hour drive from our home. I guess you could say that we’ve been taking day trips to get ourselves out of the house and into the fresh air. One of the things we’ve been focusing on is state and local parks. We enjoy walking and are focused on getting some much needed exercise.
We stumbled upon Schiavoni Park in Hummelstown which is a 15 minute drive from our home. We had driven by the park numerous times but this was our first visit. What’s really nice about this park is that it runs alongside the Swatara Creek so you can walk the trails, go fishing, kayaking, tubing, canoeing and guess what? The park has a disc golf course that you can play too!
There are two paved walking trails that visitors can use. The Shiavoni Park Trail is .4 miles and the McNaughton Trail is .8 miles in length. We decided to walk both trails. I’m partially disabled and I had no issues out on the trails. There are no big hills to climb. I would say that it’s wheelchair accessible.
The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting. There are shaded areas along both trails with a few benches if you need to sit down to rest. There is no running water but you’ll find several porta-potties located near the parking lot. Dogs are permitted but must remained leashed at all times.
We had a great time exploring Shiavoni Park and will be returning on a regular basis. We’re working hard to get physically fit and enjoy the great outdoors. This park is great for those who live in the area or those who may be passing through.
