Last weekend I sat down with my 11 year old daughter to work on a project from the Origami Animals Book from Dover Publications. The book contains instructions for 8 projects and comes with 200 sheets of origami paper in 20 different patterns and colors.
The book has step-by-step instructions to make 8 different animals: Little Bird, Caterpillar, 9-Fold Butterfly, Crab, Scottie Dog, Cat, Turtle, and Owl. In the front of the book you’ll find a section with instructions on how to choose paper, how to fold and a techniques section to give you all of the instructions that you need to get started.
Princess read through all of the instructions & techniques at the beginning of the book. She then leafed through the patterns and opted to make the Traditional Cat. You’ll use a simple folding sequence to make many different shaped cats using the step-by-step instructions in the book. The folding diagrams are in color and are written & shown in a way that even a beginner can understand.
It took Princess less than 40 minutes to make a cat which turned out super cute. She decided to make two more using different colored & patterned paper that are included in the back of the book. Choosing the paper took her long to do than the folding to make the cat. That’s what happens when you have 200 sheets to choose from!
Origami How-To Books like this one make great birthday and holiday gifts for older children and adults on your gift-giving list. The book includes the paper so all you need to do is wrap it up or place it into a gift bag. Princess is 11 years old and had no problem reading the book and following the step-by-step instructions to make several projects from it. Let the creativity flow. You can pick it up from Amazon for less than $10.00 making it an affordable gift!
