Kid’s Crafts Hand-Painted Black Cat Seashells

September 5, 2020 by Shelly

Kid's Crafts Hand-Painted Black Cat SeashellsCats are beloved by millions of people around the world. While dogs may be man’s best friend…cats are certainly running a close second. Last year we rescued and adopted 2 cats which my grandchildren instantly fell in-love with. Sadly…we lost Tucker last October to a severe illness but we still have our adorable Romeo who just turned 10 months old. Yes, technically still a kitten but he’s a big boy!!!

My 11 year old granddaughter painted this black cat design onto a large 4 1/2″ wide clam shell seashell that we collected from the beach last year. You need to thoroughly wash and dry all seashells before painting on them to remove sand and debris. I recommend hand washing them with Dawn liquid dish soap and warm water. I fill up my kitchen sink and let them soak for 30 minutes, lightly scrub them and then rinse. Let them dry for a day or two before using them. This will also remove any “fishy” odors from the shells.

Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish

Base coat the clam shell with 2 coats of black acrylic craft paint…allowing 30 minutes of drying time between coats. Once dry you can add the hand-painted facial features using acrylic craft paint pens to make it quick and easy for kids!

Use the gold paint pen to make 2 almond shaped eyes. You may have to do 2 coats to get the needed coverage. Use the pink paint pen to make a small triangular shaped nose and mouth. Use the silver paint pen to make the cat’s whiskers. Use the black paint pen to add his inner eye area as shown in the photograph. Once that is dry you’ll want to add on the little dot to the inner eye. Let dry for several hours or until paint is no longer tacky.

Take painted seashells outside. Spray each one with 1-2 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer allowing 30 minutes of drying time between coats. This will protect the painted finish for several years. You can now use them inside our outside of your home. They look great decorating your flower beds and garden areas.

This shell is perfect for the cat face. My great niece and family were at the beach last week. Her Mommy told me that Zay picked up a lot of shells that they had cleaned. Her next visit Zay and I will be doing a cat face.
