Fall Fun – Apple Picking

September 23, 2020 by Shelly

Fall Apple PickingDuring the Fall season we like to take our grandchildren out for some festive Autumn activities. Those activities include: Hayrides, Corn Mazes, Haunted Houses, Apple Picking, Fall Foliage Drives & Walks, a visit to the Pumpkin Patch, etc. The kids look forward to the activities every year.

Last week we took the kids to a local Farm Market and Orchard to go apple picking. We picked a day that had cooler, but dry weather. We had cloudy skies and a nice breeze. We don’t like being out in the middle of a farmer’s field in blazing heat, sunshine and humidity.

Fall Apple Picking

We got there around 11 AM before they got too busy. We try our best during Covid-19 to avoid crowds and to enjoy “safer” outdoor activities. Even though we were outside the entire time we chose to wear masks and practice social distancing from other people. We would rather be safe, than sorry.

After buying our bag we headed out into the orchard. It’s a LARGE orchard and we knew that the trees that were close to the parking area would be picked over. So…we walked way out into the field to find the best trees that were still loaded with big apples!!! As we walked our 5 year old grandson told us some fun stories which made us laugh.

Fall Apple Picking

Apple picking with the grandchildren was a lot of fun! Princess (age 11) is old enough to pick apples from the tree all by herself. Prince (age 5) needed Hubby to hoist him up onto his shoulders so that he could reach them. Poor hubby, he did have quite the backache later that night….but the kids had so much fun and we had fun watching them!

We turned our apple picking party into a contest. We had to judge who had picked the best looking apple and who picked the largest apple. The prizes? Well, on the way home we stopped at one of our favorite ice cream shops and the kids got ice cream treats! Princess selected her usual Banana Split, Prince had a dish of Cotton Candy ice cream, Hubby went for a quad Banana Split and I went with Graham Cracker Flavored Ice Cream with mini chocolate chips and marshmallows. Oh my, so good!

Fall Apple Picking

Here’s a few photos from our apple picking adventure. What kind of fall activities do you enjoy doing with your family? Oh yeah…I’m using all of those apples to make homemade applesauce and apple butter. I’ll post those recipes on the blog soon.

This looks like a super fun day and I love the idea that you turned it into a contest that sounds fun. I so love the smell of an apple orchard.

In my younger days we would go apple picking. It was always so much fun watching the kids. When we took our apples home we would save some to eat but we made some goodies. Apple sauce/apple cake/pie……………. We have a farm about 30 miles from us that is very popular and they do some great things for Halloween………….. I just wonder if they will do anything this year.

We go to the pumpkin patch to pick out some pumpkins and enjoy apple cider and cookies. Too rainy now but hopefully something we can do next week.

I wish there were a place around here to go for apple picking. I would like to get them off the tree. Thank you for the story. I love family fun stories.

We too went apple picking. We arrived at 11 AM so that it would not be very crowded. My grandchildren all enjoyed it.
