I’ve been crocheting for 50+ years. The first item that I made was a scarf, followed up by a hat and then mittens. When I was a young girl you made these items for yourself every year. It’s a skill that mothers and grandmother’s passed onto their daughters. To this day I still enjoy sitting down with a ball of yarn and a hook.
Christmas Ornaments to Crochet by Barbara Christopher is a great book for those who are looking for projects to make this holiday season. If you’re new to crocheting the author includes a section in the back of the book to help teach you or give you a nice little refresher course if it has been awhile since you picked up a hook.
There are more than 50 different ornaments for you to choose from. Each one comes with complete instructions on supplies needed and how to complete the project. The ornaments are made by using three different sized DMC Cebelia (a cotton type of thread). You can easily change the size of the ornament by changing out your thread size and hook size. Instructions are included for conversions.
The author recommends that you block and starch each ornament so that it holds its shape. You can find starches out in the retail marketplace or make your own at home (instructions are given for that too).
I think the designs in the book are darling. I’m going to make up a few of them and attach them to holiday packages this year as an added little gift. You can easily attach a pin on the back of them and turn them into brooches for your winter coat, hang them from a window with suction cups to give the appearance of snowflakes, decorate the mantle, a swag or even a wreath. I’ve gotten all kinds of decorating ideas!
