The World War II Lookout Tower at Sunset Beach in Cape May

August 26, 2020 by Shelly

We love to take road trips and are passionate about traveling. When we’re on a road trip we seek out veteran memorials and historical sites. We really appreciate the ones that we find in small hometowns across the nation. It’s important that we NEVER forget our nation’s heroes.

A few months ago we were down in Cape May in New Jersey. We took a short drive to Sunset Beach to check out some of their attractions. At Sunset Beach you’ll find a small Beach Grille, 3 gift shops, Sunset Beach Mini Golf, A small beach area which is along the Delaware Bay and a few historical sites.

The World War II Lookout Tower (fire tower) is free to visit if you just want to walk around the grounds and read the information plaques. There are several of them that give you the history of the Lookout Tower and how it played a part in World War II in protecting our coastline. If you want to go inside the tower and climb up the steps (there are a lot of them) you’ll have to pay an admission fee.

We spent 20 minutes visiting the tower. Due to my disability…I stayed outside walking the grounds while my husband climbed the steps inside the tower. He told me that the views were breathtaking once he reached the top. He could see a portion of the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape May Lighthouse a couple of miles away, the Delaware Bay, Sunset Beach, etc.

I’m glad that small historical sites like this one are being preserved and opened up to the public. It’s important to educate ourselves about our country’s history. While our history isn’t perfect…it’s what has shaped us into the great nation that we are today.

If you’re going to be visiting the Stone Harbor, Wildwood and/or Cape May areas in New Jersey we highly recommend that you plan a short visit to Sunset Beach. You’ll find several family-friend activities & things for you to see and do!
