The target audience for this series is kids age 8-12, but I believe that in addition to those youngsters, The Healthy Junior Chef Cookbook will appeal to teens, college students, young adults, and even grown-ups. The book’s information and recipes are simple enough for relative novices to the kitchen, yet interesting and varied enough for any cook to enjoy and learn from. For youngsters, many of the recipes will require adult supervision or at least an adult nearby, since they involve using kitchen tools like sharp knives, spiralizers, food processors, and hot pots and pans, which are potentially dangerous if not used correctly.

The recipes are kid-friendly without being condescending, and all promise great flavors from healthful ingredients and cooking methods. The book’s Introduction sums it up nicely: “Don’t be put off by the word healthy. In this book, healthy equals tasty, so keep an open mind and you’ll quickly discover wonderful new flavors in every dish.”

That goal is achieved by embracing foods from many different cultures and traditions, such as Vietnamese Lettuce Wraps, Pineapple & Chicken Kebabs, Linguine Primavera, Tzatziki, Chicken-Tortilla Soup, Chickpea Coconut Curry with Carrots & Ginger, and Inside-Out Veggie Sushi. Can’t get more international than that! American-style standards are also given a healthy twist, with gems Turkey Meatloaf, Chocolate Chia Pudding, and Healthy-ish Banana Bread. The wide variety of recipes spans every meal, but snacks and desserts are covered, too, to keep hungry junior chefs satisfied and happy.
