A Guide to Perfume Notes

A Guide to Perfume NotesPerfume is a wonderful thing and the industry is forever growing with new combinations of scents and innovative perfume processes.

That being said, the composition of a perfume can still elude many, as consumers are so often confronted with the end result, rather than the process and mixture of what creates the final scent.

So, what is it that makes a perfume exactly how it smells? It is a mixture of things!

Perfumes are usually made up of base notes, middle notes, and top notes. How these notes blend together and react with each other is what creates the final outcome when spritzed in the air.

However, this scent can change yet again when mixed with the oils on the skin, creating a somewhat unique scent on everyone, regardless of the same notes being used in each perfume.

There are plenty of notes to choose from, but there are some that are more popular for a reason. This piece will take a look at what those notes are and what they mean!

What are Perfume Notes?

Notes are essentially different ingredients in a perfume and are standalone scents all by themselves. But when combined, they complement each other to create a whole new scent.

There are predominantly three different types of notes: top notes, middle notes, and bottom notes. How the nose reacts to scents together, either in the air or on the skin, is unique from person to person.

Because of this, it can be expensive to try different perfumes, only to discover that they do not smell how imagined, which is why a monthly perfume box is a fantastic way to discover new favorite scents before committing!

So, what is the difference between the three categories of perfume notes?

What are Perfume Top Notes and Which are the Most Popular?

Top notes are scents that are noticed the moment a perfume is sprayed, which is why it is important not to judge a perfume solely on its initial smell, especially in the air!

Top notes in general only last for around 15 minutes and disappear shortly after depending on weather and temperature. Top notes do not last long on the skin, so it is important to wait for the middle and base notes to come through when choosing the ideal perfume.

Popular top notes are the lightest, freshest scent and include crisp lime, mint, orange, bermagot, and magnolia.

What are Perfume Middle Notes, and Which are the Most Popular?

Middle notes come into fruition when the top notes have just started to fade away. The middle notes last much longer than the top notes, but not as long as the base notes.

Middle notes are usually deliciously floral and can include delicate rose, jasmine, and lily of the valley.

What are Base Perfume Notes, and Which are the Most Popular?

Base notes are the strongest and are the longest lasting! These notes are more noticeable as the top and middle notes start to fade, leaving a more accurate representation of the fragrance that will be on the skin for the longest period.

Scrummy base notes include warm amber, sandalwood, musk, and patchouli.

Feel free to mix and match any notes to find the perfect scent!
