Our family loves to play games and we’re always looking for new games to play. The Space Battle Lunchtime Card Game from Oni Games is for children ages 10 & up. You’ll need 2-5 players and play time will take a minimum of 30 minutes, although on average for our family it was around 45-50 minutes. Compete for fame and glory using otherworldly ingredients to prepare outlandish dishes! You’ll want to spend several minutes reading the instructions and helping your kids learn how to play. My 11 year old daughter understood how to play pretty quickly. My son is too young for the game so when he played with us he played as part of my team. The game can be played on the floor or at a table. This is not the type of game you can really play in small spaces due to needing an area to set up the piles of cards.

When it comes to the Flavor Cards here are some examples: Savory or Bitter, Spicy or Bitter, Sweet or Sour, Sweet or Savory, Sweet or Spicy, Sour or Spicy and so forth.

Examples of Dish Cards: Spiky Snaffgrabber, Tel-Empathic Twist, Chickenish, Braised Xeno-Sticks, Pan-Fried Space Bass, Coral Crunch, Strawberry Adjacent Leg, Raw Glish with Sauce and so forth. You gotta love these dish names, they sound so appetizing!

Check out the video which will show you how to play the game. I recommend you watch the video before or after reading the book. The game is a little challenging at the beginning but becomes easier as you go along.

My husband and I sat down with our two kids and got started with the game. I admit that all four us cracked up reading the names of the various dishes as we went along. We found it most comfortable to play the game while sitting on the floor with our floor pillows and in bean bag chairs. It’s a really nice game for the older kids and the adults to play together. It really gets you thinking, teaches you a lot of patience and good sportsmanship for sure.

Space Battle Lunchtime Book

The game was inspired by the book titled Space Battle Lunchtime – Volume One – Lights, Camera, Snacktion! by Natalie Riess. The book reminds me of an older child’s comic book with a well-written, entertaining and fun story line.

Book Synopsis: Space Battle Lunchtime is a hit show broadcast all over the universe, and the new season is about  to start! When one of the competing chefs drops out at the last minute, an aspiring baker from Earth, Peony, is offered the chance to compete for fame, glory, and a 20,000 Solarbuck prize. All she has to do is impress the alien judges and beat the other five chefs (also aliens): mysterious Neptunia, sneaky Melonhead, intimidating Jacques, fierce Owline, and rugged Meatabax.

I can understand how this card game would appeal to older children and many adults. My grandchildren are still too young to play it.
