How to Balance a Career with a Family

May 25, 2020 by Sam H.

How to Balance a Career with a FamilyCooking meals, school runs, and catering to your children’s every need could require a considerable amount of your time and focus. As a result, you might struggle to juggle parenthood with a demanding career or might be failing to follow your professional dreams. Here are some top tips on how to balance a career with a family.

Request Flexible Working Hours

Parents shouldn’t need to choose between caring for their children and their career. If you’re struggling to manage both jobs, discuss the possibility of flexible working hours with your employer.

If you can commit to a set number of working hours per week, your boss might have no qualms in allowing you to work around your children. Don’t be afraid to request a meeting with your manager, as most employers are more than happy to support working parents.

Ask About Remote Working Opportunities

Another option could be to work from home one or more days per week, which could be ideal if childcare is an issue. Remote working could provide greater flexibility for a school run or to care for your children when they are poorly and cannot go to school. So, you can successfully raise your kids without neglecting your job. You can still keep on top of your work as a remote worker, plus, with the benefit of technology such as finding the best ai notetaker for online meetings, you can get all the information you need without the worry that you are missing out on vital knowledge.

Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams

Many parents make the big mistake of ignoring their dreams, as they believe it is impossible to care for their kids while advancing their skill set. However, the right course could help you to achieve your professional goals at a faster rate and enjoy a higher annual salary, which could provide your children with a better quality of life.

Improve Your Time Management Skills

Many parents often feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day. If this is the case, you might need to refine your time management skills. To do so, you could:

• Wake up earlier
• Prioritize tasks
• Focus on single tasking
• Schedule jobs on your to-do list
• Set yourself deadlines

It’s also essential your family take on various responsibilities within the home. Provide your kids with age-appropriate responsibilities, which could remove some of the pressure on your shoulders. For example, young children could tidy away their toys or fold laundry, while teenagers could wash dishes, brush the floor, or take the dog for a walk.

Apply for a New Position

If a demanding job is taking you away from your family, it might be time to look for a new role that provides a better work-life balance. Believe it or not, not all positions will require you to work 50 hours or more per week.

If your boss expects too much of you or you cannot handle challenging tasks, browse the job market to find a role that will allow you to pursue your professional passions while making time for your kids and partner.

If you are struggling to get a balance between raising a family and earning a salary, you should follow the above top tips.

These are all good tips. Sometimes you cannot request different time schedules. As a former working mom I did my best to make sure my kids and family had a lot of time with me.
