When it comes to beauty treatments and their safety and effectiveness, there are some you can certainly do yourself at home and then there are others that should only be performed by a trained professional. Which ones fall into which category?

A couple of them can safely be done in the comfort of your own home; and some of them, you should shell out the cash for an expert, so you know they are done right. Here is a shortlist of popular beauty treatments done at home and in the office:

1. Teeth Whitening

Drugstore shelves are full of home teeth whitening kits. From trays to strips, these kits claim to give you a dazzling smile in just minutes as you sit at home watching TV. While these DIY kits are safe and they do give you a somewhat brighter smile, for real results, you should visit a teeth whitening clinic.

If your teeth are significantly stained or discolored, a professional teeth whitening is the only solution that will give you the multi-shade brightening you desire.

2. LED Light Treatments

LED light treatments are a great way to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and inflammation. LED lights are popular with home beauticians because they are easy to use, and they provide acceptable results. In-home LEDs aren’t as strong as professional lights, but they make a great supplement to any light therapy you may have done in-office.

3. Multi-Step Facials

While you can certainly do exfoliants and masks at home, some facial treatments are better left to the pros. For example, extractions (blackheads, pimple-popping, etc.) can damage the skin if not performed correctly, while chemical peels can burn and scar if you’re not well-versed in their use.

Furthermore, a trained aesthetician can analyze your skin and offer product and treatment recommendations that best suit your skin.

4. Injectables

Injectables (Botox, cortisone, Dysport, Xeomin, lip fillers, etc.) should only be given by a professional. You should never attempt to give yourself any type of facial injection as the in-home products you purchase online contain non-FDA-approved ingredients that can cause infection, deformities, and even death.

There is never a good reason to try injecting anything into your face yourself. These types of products are for trained professionals to use and not for the general public’s use ever.

5. Microneedling

Microneedling is a very popular facial treatment at the moment. The procedure targets wrinkles, large pores, and scars, encouraging the skin to produce collagen to smooth, firm, and tone.

During the microneedling procedure, a dermatologist or plastic surgeon rolls a pen-like device over the treatment area to prick the skin. The pinpricks are so small they are undetectable, but afterward, the healed skin should be firmer and smoother than before.

The Internet offers at-home microneedling pens and rollers for sale, but you can’t be sure of their safety. These products are often not sterile and contain unsharp needles that could cause excess pain and infection. Leave microneedling to the professionals.

There’s an old saying that goes, “beauty is pain.” In some cases, this phrase is absolutely true, especially if you attempt to do a beauty treatment at home that should be left to the experts. While some treatments like light exfoliating, masks, and LED light therapy can be safe and effective when done at home, other facial treatments such as microneedling and injectables should be done under the close guidance and steady hand of a trained professional.

I agree with you that most of the treatments should be left to the experts. I think I would not try any of these for myself.

  2. I think I can safely pass on all of these. I’ll just get a good night’s sleep.

  3. I really enjoyed reading this post there are a few items on here that I really want to try. I am interested in the LED light and also the Microneedling.
