Tips for Purchasing and Using a Fire Extinguisher
1. There are 4 different type’s of fire extinguishers out in the retail marketplace. They’re identified as Class A, B, C. and D. Each class will put out a different type of fire. When purchasing you need to purchase the correct class/type for your needs.
2. You need to place one on every level in your home, one in the kitchen and if you have a garage you need to place one in there too! Don’t hide them away or make them difficult to get to during an emergency.
3. Familiarize yourself with how to use one. Read over the instructions and locate the different features on the unit. You need to re-familiarize yourself with the instructions several times a year. Every member in the household needs to learn how to use one.
4. Check for the expiration date on a seasonal or quarterly basis. Inspect them for damage too. Replace them as needed.
5. Consider size. Larger fire extinguishers can be difficult to handle and harder to store. Smaller units can be just as effective as larger units.
6. If you’re entertaining out-of-town guests make sure they know the location of each fire extinguisher in your home along with all exits to get outside.
7. Utilize the Fire Department! Contact your local fire department to see if they offer classes to the public on how to properly purchase, store and use a fire extinguisher.
Another great idea that can save lives is to host family fire drills several times a year. Make a family “escape plan” and get the entire family involved. If your local fire company hosts community events make sure you take time to attend them. You can learn a lot from your local fire company!

Although I have a couple around my home I did not realize that there were different types. I shall have to get more information. Thanks for this post.
I have a couple around the house but I will have to admit that I have not checked on location or expiration date in several years and honestly don’t even know if I would remember how to use one in an emergency. Good safety reminder.
I’ve never had one but it does make sense to keep them in the house. Really, it’s silly not to have them. They aren’t terribly expensive, especially when you consider the cost of a fire.
We have several all over the house. My husband really believes in them. Thank you for the reminder to check them.
I worked in a hospital for several years. Fire extinguishers save lives and I’ve personally seen that with my own eyes. It’s important that every household has several of them and that occupants know how to use them!
Hmm. I need to update my fire extinguisher. I know it’s been a while.
Yes you do! Please check the expiration date on it. If it’s expired get a new one. Plus the newer ones are a lot easier to use and compact in size. Easy to store.
