Summer Decorating: How to Make a Coastal Beach Door Wreath

Coastal Beach Door WreathWhen it comes to decorating I like to change out key pieces in my home to reflect the current season. Those pieces are: table linens, bath linens, kitchen linens, front & back door wreaths, wind chimes on front porch, front and back door mats, etc. Those changes can keep your home updated from season-to-season.

Last weekend I went down into my craft room to work on a new door wreath for our back door. We go in and out of that door a lot during the summertime to access our swimming pool, veggie garden, the grandchildren’s swing set, etc. I like it to look just as festive as our front door.

All of the supplies used for this project were purchased at my local Dollar Tree and at our local A.C. Moore’s craft store. Yes, they’re going out of business but you can find supplies at your local Hobby Lobby and Michael’s stores too.

Coastal Beach Door Wreath

Large Grapevine Wreath
1 Bag Spanish Moss
1 Bag Mixed Seashells
1 Sea Sponge
Beach Themed Wood Cut-Outs (flip flops, sunglasses, fish, beach umbrella)
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
1 Roll Beach Print Wire-Edge Ribbon
1-2 Rolls Magic Mesh Ribbon (Coordinating Color)
Scissors

To get started you’ll want to use your hot glue gun to add a small amount of the Spanish Moss onto your grapevine wreath. Just add a little bit here and there. You’ll want to unwind your Magic Mesh (I used a turquoise color). Wrap it around the wreath and tack it down every few inches with your glue gun. It should look loopy in it’s appearance, not tightly wound around the wreath.

Make a loopy bow using the satin ribbon and another loopy bow using the Magic Mesh. Use your hot glue gun to glue the Magic Mesh bow down first (at the top) and then the satin ribbon bow on top of that. Be generous with the amount of glue that you’re using!

Glue on your 4 wood accents, evenly spaced around the wreath. Then fill in the areas in between them with seashells, torn small pieces of the sea sponge, smooth beach pebbles, faux sea glass, etc. Any beach related goodies that you have on hand. You can really load up the embellishments or keep it simple.  Let everything dry for 1 hour. Go back over your wreath to see if you need to tack anything down with additional glue. Let dry again for 1 hour.

If needed…you can make a hanging loop for the back with wire, twine or ribbon. I’m going to use my wreath hanger on my back door to hang our new beach themed door wreath. That’s it, you’re done! You can find all kinds of fun things (on the cheap) to decorate your wreath at the craft store or at your local Dollar Tree.

You made a beautiful coastal themed wreath right now. I shall need to see if I can have curbside delivery at my place.

  2. This is so bright and cheery and the bow is amazing. You did a really good job you could sell these! I love the beach theme. The little shells are so cute and love the fist too.

I really like this. My favorite thing might be the little additions like the flip flops and the umbrella. They really make the wreath fun.

  5. Can’t go to a local craft store right now. This is definitely a fun little project. I’ll keep this blog post in mind when things are back to normal.
