5 Unusual Things to Do in Tennessee This Weekend
Are you looking for a place to break away for the weekend? Consider Tennessee! You can check out hotels in Nashville, Tennessee here.
While there are tons of attractions in Memphis and Nashville, there are so many other things to do in Tennessee this weekend too.
So if you’re ready to see some attractions that are out of the ordinary, here are five suggestions.
1. Forbidden Caverns
The Forbidden Caverns stretch for half a mile along the eastern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. It is full of interesting mineral formations, eerie grottoes, and reflecting pools.
And while there is no shortage of caverns in Tennessee, what makes Forbidden Caverns unique is that they’re lit up with various colors in a 1960s psychedelic fashion.
Today, groups are led through the caverns by trained guides and are served up light shows and sound presentations that highlight the history of the caves.
2. Peabody Hotel Duck March
Every day around 11 am, a group of ducks is led from their penthouse at Memphis’s Peabody Hotel to waddle down a red carpet to the hotel lobby’s fountain.
There’s a Sousa march as the ducks trot up a small, custom stairway that leads to the waters of the marble fountain. They spend the day playing in the lobby fountain and then are returned to their enclosed rooftop penthouse.
This tradition dates back to the early 1900s and continues like clockwork each day. Children are permitted to sit at the edge of the red carpet to get the best views of the march.
3. International Rock-A-Billy Hall of Fame
Between Memphis and Nashville, in the city of Jackson, sits the International Rock-A-Billy Hall of Fame and Museum. If you’re a fan of Rock-a-Billy, or even if you aren’t, this is a great attraction.
With a unique collection of historical videos, life-size oil portraits of Rock-a-Billy legends, live music every Friday night and a Rock-a-Billy dance team that offers up line dance lessons every Monday night, there’s no time to be bored at this museum.
4. Wine Tours
Tennessee may not come immediately to mind when considering wine regions. Yet more and more states in the US are discovering unique microclimates that make their region suitable for growing wine grapes.
In 2008, Tennessee established the Rocky Top Wine Trail. At the time, it consisted of three local wineries cooperating together. Today, the trail has five wineries.
Guests on wine tours can sample from over 70 unique, award-winning wines by the time they’ve completed the Trail, all while taking in the amazing views of the Great Smoky Mountains.
5. Fortress of Faith (Greenback Castle)
Located in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Fortress of Faith is a unique handmade castle created by the fascinating Floyd Banks Junior.
Banks, known as Junior, has spent 30 years on this elaborate shapes-in-plaster project and assigns a spiritual significance to the shapes within the plaster. It’s truly impressive.
While Junior works very hard to provide a personalized tour experience, he asks nothing in return. So strongly consider a donation.
