When you’re cleaning your home and keeping up with regular maintenance, it’s sometimes easy to forget about the gutters. If your gutters aren’t cleaned properly, they can become clogged.
Clogged gutters can wreak havoc on your home and garden. It’s essential to maintain your gutters as you would all other aspects of your home.
The great thing about cleaning your home’s gutters is that the process is quite simple. All you’ll need to do is follow these steps. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Take Necessary Precautions
Before you head up on your ladder and begin the cleaning process, keep a few safety measures in mind. Ensure that you place the ladder on a firm area on the ground. Use a stabilizer as well to protect your home.
Wear the right clothing items including gloves and safety glasses. You should also take the time to place a tarp over your garden and landscaping to keep it safe from falling debris as you clean.
The last thing you want to do is cause damage to your landscaping while trying to clean the gutters.
2. Remove Large Debris
Once you have all the necessary safety precautions in place, it’s time to climb the ladder. Begin cleaning your gutters by removing all large debris items first. You can do this step with the use of your hands.
Be sure to have your gloves on and simply grab and remove all debris inside your gutters that you can. If you purchased a gutter cleaning kit, you can use the rake and scoop that comes in the kit.
A good tip is to attach a bucket on each side of your ladder. Use one bucket to place all your tools in. Use the other bucket to place all the removed debris in.
3. Clear Them Out Using Water
Once all the larger items are removed, you can then use a garden hose to clear out the rest of the debris using water pressure. As the debris and water drain down the downspouts, you’ll need to keep your garden and landscaping in mind.
Without the use of a rainwater tank, the water will pick up fertilizer, soil, and pesticides and send them towards other areas of your yard where you don’t want them. You can purchase one here to ensure you don’t come across this problem.
Using a water hose will remove any leftover debris that you weren’t able to remove and send it down the downspout.
