Off-Shore Storms and the Waves Roll In
Over the years I’ve shared a lot of photos on the blog from our adventures down at the Jersey Shore. The majority of our adventures take place in Ocean City, Stone Harbor, Wildwood and Cape May, New Jersey.
While I was looking through some old travel posts I realized that I never shared any pictures of the Atlantic Ocean when its riled up and angry. When there are storms rolling through or lingering just offshore. It can be quite a sight!
In early October we were down in Wildwood and there was a low pressure storm system sitting right offshore. We had rain for 3 days and some areas on the island ended up flooding. Why? There are areas on the island that are below sea level so sometimes when storms come through they’ll flood.
Today I’m sharing a few photos from that time period where you can see the Atlantic Ocean during low tide was right up against the sea wall. When high tide came in later that night the water was splashing over the sea wall and flooding the street.
On cloudy and rainy days the ocean always looks angry with rough seas and high waves. The water looks gray instead of blue and the smell in the air gets fishy. You know…a fishy, saltwater type of smell. You always know that your down at the seashore when it smells like that!!!
We stood there for about an hour watching a sail boat not too far out in the distance trying to get in. I imagine it was a little difficult due to the rough seas and winds. The tides were definitely running higher and it was during a full moon period when they normally run higher too. They did eventually get in and dock safely down in Cape May Harbor.
Even with the few days of crappy weather that we had…it was one of our better vacations down to the beach. Why you might ask? Well, because the majority of the tourists were gone for the season! We didn’t have to wait in any lines, make any restaurant reservations, stores & shops were still open for the season, etc. October is still a great time to visit the Jersey Shore!
