Your Ultimate Guide to Purifying Water at Home

February 2, 2020 by Sam H.

Your Ultimate Guide to Purifying Water at HomeDid you know that there are over 80 different contaminants that could be lurking in your drinking water?

When I first learned about this fact, it made me question how many times I’d been served dirty water at restaurants, friends’ houses, and elsewhere. Thinking about my own house water wasn’t my first instinct because most people view their homes as their safe place. The truth is that anyone’s drinking water could be affecting their health since you can’t see or smell most contaminants.

If you’re like me, then you’re probably wondering if purifying water is necessary to keep you safe. Keep reading to learn how you can test your water and how you can keep it clean.

How to Tell If You Need Water Purification

Since there are dozens of different contaminants that could be in your water, it can be challenging figuring out which tests you need. Tests can get expensive the more chemicals you test for, so being selective can help keep the costs low.

This guide can walk you through the testing methods and which common contaminants you should look out for.

If you want to know how to filter water, the good news is that there are plenty of simple and effective water purification methods you can choose from.

1. Pitcher Filters Are Great at Purifying Water

One of the most common ways people purify their water is by running it through a pitcher filter first. After you buy the pitcher, the only cost you’ll have to keep up with is replacing the filter every few months. Since the pitchers are large, you won’t have to fill it constantly.

2. Faucet Filters Add Convenience

Even though modern pitcher filters hold a lot of water, some people don’t want to be bothered with filling them and waiting a few minutes before they can drink. If you want to have safe drinking water as soon as you get thirsty, installing a faucet filter could be the right solution for you.

3. Get a Well Water Filter

A large portion of Americans get their drinking water from a well. Since private wells aren’t monitored closely, installing a well water filtration system will ensure your water is safe to drink at all times.

4. Iodine and Chlorine Drops Are Effective Short-Term Solutions

As it turns out, both iodine and chlorine are great at neutralizing contaminants in water. Since using too many drops can be harmful to your health, though, it’s important to follow the directions closely and find a safer long-term solution to permanently fix your water.

5. You Can Boil Your Water During Emergencies

Boiling your water isn’t the most practical filtration system, but it always works if you’re ever in a pinch. Boiling large batches and filling your own bottles can help you stock up on clean water.

Now You Know How to Make Water Cleaner and More Refreshing

Now that you know all about testing and purifying water, you can take your health into your own hands. Since our bodies are made mostly out of water, it’s important to make sure you’re drinking the best water available.

I use a pitcher to purify my water all the time. I have been doing this for years.

The town that I’m temporarily staying in has a lot of boil water alerts, which has me skeptical about the safety of the water. I try to avoid drinking it. A filter would definitely be nice to have.

We have a new filter on our well but we still use a pitcher filter for the coffee water. It does make a difference.
