This project won’t cost you a lot of money and each seashell is one-of-a-kind since it’s hand-painted. We used large 4″ and 5″ wide clam shells that we collected from the beach. Kids can sit them around in their room, use as a paper weight on their desk, display them in the garden as yard art, etc.

Before getting started with this project you’ll want to wash and thoroughly dry all shells a few days before painting on them. You need to remove all of the sand, debris and fishy odors. We wash them in warm, soapy water. Let them soak for 5-10 minutes, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser for stubborn debris, rinse and then let them thoroughly air dry.

Large, Clean Clam Seashell
Red and Black Acrylic Craft Paint
Fine Tip Black Sharpie Marker
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish
Mickey Mouse Head Paper Template

Paper Template: Do an image search on Google for Mickey Mouse Head Template. Hundreds of them will come up. Find one you like and re-size it to fit onto your seashells. Print it out and then cut it out with scissors. You now have a template!

Base coat the shell with 1-2 coats of red acrylic craft paint. We opted to do 2 coats and allowed 30 minutes of drying time between each coat of paint. Make sure its thoroughly dry before moving onto the next step.

Place your paper template down onto the shell. Use the black Sharpie Marker to trace around it to obtain your outline. Use the black acrylic craft paint to paint Mickey’s head onto the shell. We used 2 coats of paint to get the nice “dark coverage” that you see in our photo. Let it thoroughly dry.

If you know the name of each child attending the party you can use the black Sharpie Marker to write their name on the shell or to add birthday wording, messages, etc. That’s entirely up to you. I personally liked the clean & simple look.

Once they’re dry take them outside. You need to spray each one with 1-2 coats of the Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer. You can use a matte finish or a glossy finish, we liked the “shine” that you see in our photo. You can make them really fancy by using a spray sealer that has “fine glitter” in it too. Let them dry until they’re no longer tacky. That’s it, you’re done!

  5. This is a cute little party favor! Frankly, I am not creative enough to have thought of painting a shell and using it as a party favor. Would be a great one for a child’s birthday party.
