Recycling Old Christmas Tree Ornaments into New Refrigerator Magnets

December 28, 2019 by Shelly

Recycling Old Christmas Tree Ornaments into Refrigerator MagnetsNow that Christmas is over I have been going through several boxes of old Christmas tree ornaments that we’ve had for years. When I say years…try decades! I haven’t used them for a long time and was going to throw them out. Instead…I decided to box some of them up to donate and others we’ll be recycling into new craft projects.

For this particular project I picked out 8 flat-backed Christmas ornaments and decided to turn them into new refrigerator magnets. This project is one that the kids help you with too!

Pick out ornaments that are fairly light-weight, on the smaller side and with a flat back. You’ll want to cut off the ornament hanger with wire cutters (if desired). While you’re at it…give them a good cleaning if needed. Let them dry.

At our local craft supply store we picked up a package of heavy duty, round-shaped magnets. They come 8 to a pack and only cost $3.50 per pack. You can select cheaper ones, but I wanted heavy-duty magnets so that they can tack up photographs, my grandchildren’s artwork, holiday greeting cards, etc. to the front of our refrigerator without sliding down.

You can use quick-drying, all-purpose craft glue, a hot glue gun or E6000 adhesive glue to add the magnet to the back side of the Christmas ornament. You’ll want to let them thoroughly dry before using them.

A fun little project to upcycle/recycle some of those holiday ornaments that you no longer use. Heck…you could even “gift them” to people next year if you choose to do so!

This is a great way to recycle old Christmas ornaments. I would never have thought of it without your post.

I love seeing new ways to upcycle what we already have. We don’t have an overabundance of ornaments but may be looking at some now that may work as magnet so I can see them year-round.

Thank you for this idea. I have so many ornaments that I don’t use. I will have to go through them.

What a great idea. I put Christmas magnets on the fridge so adding some would just jazz it up.
