Quick and Thorough Guide to Getting Around New Orleans

December 11, 2019 by Sam H.

Almost 18 million tourists visit New Orleans each year. Some come for the purple beads, others for the magical history of this fascinating city.

What most tourists neglect to plan is their transportation.

New Orleans isn’t like other major cities that have extensive public transportation infrastructure. There is some, but to see certain sights, you’ll need to plan how you’re going to get there.

Curious about getting around New Orleans on your trip? Keep reading for our top suggestions.

Quick and Thorough Guide to Getting Around New Orleans

1. Streetcars and Buses

New Orleans has a reputation for its streetcars. They’re old-timey, historic, and charming.

When visiting Uptown, it’s best to plan on taking the St. Charles streetcar line. It can take you from the French Quarter to the Garden District to Carrollton and back.

To explore City Park, you should take the 91 Jackson Avenue bus to get around. There are tons of awesome cafes, restaurants, and shops to check out in Mid City.

You can get an all-day bus pass, called Jazzy Passes, for only $3! For $9, upgrade to a three-day pass.

2. Walking and Pedicabs

The French Quarter is a very walkable area of town. Most locals and visitors walk down the roads where vehicles are limited.

But if you get tired of walking, hop on one of the available pedicabs. You sit in the cab box, which is pulled by the bicycle upfront. Most pedicab drivers are locals who know lots of great stops to recommend.

Walking is free, but riding in a $5 pedicab gives you an extra fun experience.

3. Rent a Car

What if you want to explore the less-touristy areas outside the city center? Louisiana has much more to see than the French Quarter.

You may want to take a day trip to Baton Rouge, the bayous, or see the plantation route along Great River Road.

For these destinations, it’s best to rent a car. Keep in mind, inside the city center, you may struggle to find parking. Consider only renting the car for the days you’re going outside the city.

4. Special Event Transport

Thousands of visitors come to New Orleans for the party scene. It’s a lively, vibrant, night-owl city perfect for bachelorettes and birthday celebrations.

For these special occasions, consider renting a party bus or limo to chauffeur you for the night.

Imagine hopping from jazz bistros to old-fashioned saloons in a sleek, stretch limo.
Or having mid-party drinks while the music blasts from your private party bus.

By hiring these special event vehicles, you’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable time in New Orleans.

Still Curious About Getting Around New Orleans?

New Orleans is a massively popular tourist destination in America. To prepare for the influx of visitors year-round, the transportation options have been elevated.

You can walk, pedicab, drive, or cruise around the city. Getting around New Orleans is easy and accessible.

New Orleans is on my bucket list, for sure. I like the idea of using streetcars. They sort of symbolize the city.
