Exploring the Pennsylvania National Guard Museum

Pennsylvania National Guard Museum in Annville, Fort Indiantown GapA few weeks ago we took a little impromptu trip up to Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania to visit the Pennsylvania National Guard Museum. If you’re going to be visiting the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, it’s located right down the street.

As a family we feel its important that all of our children be well educated in our country’s history. That includes things about the military and war. As grandparents, its our job to see that they get this education BEYOND the history books that they’re given at school which are often biased and skewed.

The Pennsylvania National Guard Museum has two main parts. The museum itself is indoors in an old 2-story military barracks building. The first floor is handicap accessible, the second floor is not. You’ll want to allow about 1 1/2 hours in your schedule to view everything inside and outside of the museum.

Indoors you’ll find all kinds of exhibits that feature old uniforms, artillery, photographs, documents, artifacts, etc. Its really interesting, so take your time viewing everything that they have to offer. Photographs are allowed, so bring along your camera with a flash!

Outside you can walk around their beautifully landscaped grounds to see old military planes, tanks, memorials and a few monuments. Make sure you stop by each item on exhibit to read the information plaque to learn more about it. My grandson loved seeing the planes and tanks!

One of the best things about visiting the museum is that its free to visit! They do accept donations (we always leave a donation), but there is no set admission fee. A great FREE family-friendly activity for you to get out there and do this summer.

After spending the day visiting the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery and the Pennsylvania National Guard Museum…we found a small town diner (restaurant) and grabbed an early dinner nearby. What a great way to spend some time with the family.
