Easy Capiz Shell Snowman Christmas Ornaments

It’s that time of the year when I like to sit down and work on my Christmas and holiday projects. Every year I look forward to making new ornaments for our Christmas tree and this craft project is super-easy to do!

You can make these adorable snowman ornaments and hang them on your Christmas tree, off a holiday wreath or garland, tie them onto your gift bags and packages, hang them around a bottle of wine, etc.

Black, White and Orange Acrylic Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer – Glossy Finish
Round Wooden Toothpick
Old Newspaper

We used white capiz shells that came with pre-drilled holes. Using orange acrylic paint, paint-on an orange triangle to serve as the nose. Dip the end of your paint brush into black acrylic paint and then “dot on” two large dots to serve as his eyes. Dip the paint brush again into the black acrylic paint and “dot on” four to five smaller dots to serve as his mouth. Let dry.

Dip the end of your paint brush into white acrylic paint and then “dot on” the inner eyes. Let your white paint dry for about 15 minutes. Take a round wooden toothpick and dip it into black acrylic paint. Use the toothpick to “dot on” the pupil (inner eye) slightly off-centered. Let dry for 2-3 hours. You want to make sure all of the paint is thoroughly dry before proceeding.

Lay a sheet of newspaper outside on the ground. Lay your capiz shells on top. Lightly spray them with the clear acrylic spray sealer. Let dry for 2-3 hours. Don’t skip this step! Your paint can easily chip-off of the capiz shell, so you need to protect the painted finish with the sealer. That’s it, you’re done!

Looking to make this project kid-friendly? You can use medium and fine point permanent markers. We like using Sharpie Markers for the Black and Orange colors and a White Chalk Marker for the inner eyes. Markers dry a lot quicker, but you’ll still need to protect the finish with the clear acrylic spray sealer.

My daughter would have fun decorating with sharpie markers. Will have to get the acrylic spray so it can handle the rain we’ve been having lately.
