7 Ways to Remodel Your Home Exterior to Make It Your Own

November 8, 2019 by Sam H.

Is your home’s exterior looking a little drab and dated?

Do you feel like the way your home looks now isn’t a reflection of your tastes as the owner?

Would you like to improve your house’s exterior but can’t imagine taking on an enormous and expensive home exterior remodeling project?

If so, you’ve come to the right place.

In this post, we offer you seven achievable and mostly budget-friendly tips on how to remodel your home exterior.

Remember that, if you make the right choices, even small changes can have a big impact on your home’s value and how much you enjoy living in it.

7 Ways to Remodel Your Home Exterior to Make It Your Own

1. Make Your Front Door Pop

You want to remodel your home exterior, but you’re on a bit of a budget.

Just like painting the cabinets can give your kitchen a new look for less, so can painting your front door an unexpected shade.

Especially if you’re making these upgrades before you put your home on the market, a bright door seriously increases your curb appeal and creates a welcoming environment for buyers.

2. Reconsider Your Roof

If you have a little (or a lot) more cash to work with on your home exterior remodeling, one of the most effective ways to increase your home’s value is to remodel your roof.

A new roof pitch, color, and even the roofing material you choose can completely transform the look of your home. Make sure you take your climate into consideration when choosing roofing materials.

After all, you don’t want an incompatible material choice to impact the temperature inside your home.

Also, be certain you’re working with the best roofing contractor possible before you begin your project. Check for insurance, speak with past clients, and secure a budget and timeline you’re comfortable with.

3. Add Exterior Lighting

Whether you always seem to drive right past your house at night or if you feel a bit unsafe walking through your front yard at times, adding porch lamps and pathway lighting does a lot more than just present your home in flattering shadows.

It also keeps you safe.

Plus, exterior lighting allows you to highlight your flower gardens, front door, trim, and home paint cover.

Don’t forget that the right lighting can also liven up your backyard, making it the perfect place for entertaining.

4. Create Columns

Painting your home exterior is too much of a chore (and an expense you can’t currently afford.)

However, there are still lots of other ways you can make your front porch much more exciting.

Why not add shorter stone columns to your front porch and build a small overhang for them to support. Not only will the columns lend your home a more luxurious feel without breaking the bank.

They’ll also give you better decorating options when Christmas and Halloween come around every year.

Additionally, consider complementing your columns with an aluminum fence. If you’re considering enhancing your home’s exterior with an aluminum fence, you’ll find it not only adds a modern touch but is also highly durable and low-maintenance, perfect for highlighting those elegant columns and creating a cohesive, polished look.

5. Add a Deck

You don’t have room for a front porch, but you want to make sure you can take advantage of your beautiful yard and the sunny summer weather at home.

So, what’s the solution?

Adding a deck.

Remember that backyard decks don’t have to be enormous to have a high impact. As long as you have enough room for seating, a grill, and perhaps a fireplace or fire pit, you’re good to go.

You can opt for either a ground-level deck or a vaulted option, though the latter will take a bit longer and cost a bit more to complete.

6. Use Exterior Trims and Moldings

You want to avoid a huge home remodeling process, but you know that your home’s exterior does leave a lot to be desired as it currently stands.

Especially if you’re interested in adding a bit of dimension to your house, exterior trims and moldings are the ideal upgrades. They’re not prohibitively expensive, you’ll have tons of materials, colors, and sizes to play with, and they can help you reinforce the specific architectural style of your home.

For example, if your home has a bit of a Victorian feel to it, opt for dentil molding. If you want to create more of a classical or rustic farmhouse look, try braced arching, gingerbread trim, or scrolled brackets.

7. Build a Walkway

Finally, we love the idea of creating a walkway that leads directly to your front door, or stepping stones that make walking through the backyard garden much more pleasant.

You can choose from countless materials other than the somewhat uninviting look concrete.

Slate tiling, cobblestone, brick, or even limestone or bluestone are all excellent choices.

If there are steps along your walkway, be sure to add small lights on the sides to prevent people from tripping.

It’s Easier Than You Think to Remodel Your Home Exterior

We hope this post has helped you realize that you don’t need to drain your savings account or start a months-long project if you want to remodel your home exterior.
Instead, making a few simple but strategic upgrades can make your home look new for less.

Of course, especially if you’re preparing to list your home for sale, you’ll need to do much more than just transform your home’s exterior. You should consider things like home inspection, home staging, and even clutter removal and home de-personalization.
