4 Charitable Ways To Make a Difference in Your Community

November 10, 2019 by Sam H.

4 Charitable Ways To Make a Difference in Your CommunityBeing part of a community is often about more than just living in a certain place. No matter where you and your family make your home, you can spend the time to meet people, form friendships, and get involved in local happenings. One way to truly invest in your community is to get involved in charity work. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to write a check to every nonprofit cause or even that you have to donate any money at all. There are several things you can do that can have a lasting impact on the people and places around where you live. Here are some things you can consider that can improve your local community.

1. Donate Furniture

When you think about donating to a charity, you may immediately consider giving money or clothing. However, there are many nonprofit organizations that take other items and use them to benefit people or causes. For example, you could give away an older car; some charities take vehicles that aren’t even running. You can find a car donation service that will arrange collection of your vehicle, whether it runs or not. You may also think about giving away furniture; when you donate piano NYC or give away a gently used couch or table, those items can be reused in ways that provide for others in your community.

2. Volunteer at a Fundraiser

Many non-profit organizations schedule events and activities throughout the year to raise money for operating expenses or specific causes. You could always participate in the fundraiser by purchasing something, but another option is giving your time. You could help run a bake sale or plan a raffle with some fun prizes to incentivise people to play, just make sure you read up on your states raffle laws first. Many fundraising events just need people to do simple tasks such as selling tickets or serving food. If you wanted to go a cut above the rest, consider looking into getting some wristbands for cancer support or another cause made. You can hand these out in exchange for donations in order to generate additional donations, as people enjoy taking something away with them, especially if it shows that they have supported a charity or good cause.

3. Sponsor a Local Beautification Effort

Most communities have campaigns designed to keep public places looking nice. While some care-taking efforts may be funded by local governments, there are other activities that require additional funds or personnel. You may want to give your time or money to support recycling campaigns, landscaping efforts, or installations of artwork in public places.

4. Offer Your Expertise

Many nonprofit organizations need professional services, and paying for consultants or independent contractors can take a hefty chunk out of a tight budget. If you have an in-demand skill or knowledge base, you could contribute your time and services to a local charity. For example, you could serve as a bookkeeper, a project manager, a carpenter, or a musician without requiring payment.

If you want to invest in your local community through giving, there are several options beyond just contributing financially. Consider volunteering your time or skills or donating household furnishings.
