Craft Project: Faux Sea Glass Covered Flower Vase
The Dollar Tree store is a great source for art and craft supplies. Every time I go in there I find a few things that I can use in my crafting projects. Our local store sells silk flowers, spools of ribbon, packs of glue sticks, paints, stickers, markers, scrapbook embellishments, bottles of glue, scissors, and all sorts of things.

Over the years I’ve received a ton of “Plain Jane” glass vases when I’ve received flower deliveries. I’m a frugal person and never throw away those vases. Matter of fact, I have a slew of them in a box down in our basement. I typically don’t use them around my home after the flowers die because…well, they’re Plain Jane.
While in our Dollar Tree I spotted bags of these flat-back glass jewels or faux sea glass. Different manufacturers call them by different names. You get a lot of them in one bag and they come in clear, beautiful colors and in different sizes. They also had a few bags of clear glass round beads. Well, a light bulb went off in my head!
I purchased 2 bags of the clear flat-back glass jewels, 1 bag of the clear glass round beads and 1 bag of the smaller flat-back blue glass jewels. I already had the flower vase, glue gun and glue sticks at home. I knew before I even left the store that I was going to use those items to decorate the outside of one of those Plain Jane vases sitting down in my basement!
Once I got home…I got busy. I found it best to lay out the flat-back glass jewels in a pattern that will work for the vase that you’re covering. In my case, I found they worked best on the straight-edged vase and didn’t work as well on a curvy one. I used my hot glue gun to adhere them onto the vase. I did one side first, made sure they were securely on, flipped it to the next side. You will want to do one side at a time and be generous with the amount of hot glue that you’re using.
After I had the vase covered I just randomly glued on some of the clear round glass beads and the smaller blue flat-back glass jewels. I thought adding those added a little texture and color. Again, be generous with the amount of glue that you’re using and don’t move the vase until everything is dry and securely on it. The glass beads and smaller jewels are perfect for filling in any gaps!!!
The flower vase turned out a lot better than I expected! It works perfectly now with my coastal and beach home decor. When the sunlight streams in through the windows and hits the vase…it really seems to sparkle and shine. You can leave it like this or glue on additional jewels, beads and charms.
When it comes to cleaning I highly recommend that you gently hand wash it. Don’t put it into the dishwasher or your glued-on items will fall off. After gently washing it, turn it upside down and let it air dry on a cotton towel.
You can use those flat-back glass jewels (faux sea glass) to decorate all kinds of things around your home. Use them to decorate your vases, flower pots, picture frames, mirror frames, toss them inside a tall glass vase or bowl, use to decorate holiday ornaments (fill a clear glass ball), etc. Tons of great uses for them!
