5 Things You Need When Preparing for the Road Trip of a Lifetime

There’s nothing like jumping in a car and hitting the road for a vacation. While it may seem like the good old fashioned road trip is a thing of the past, the reality is, many people would rather drive than fly these days, and for a plethora of different reasons. Whatever it is that’s sending you out on the road trip of a lifetime, tick every item off this checklist to ensure your adventure is a safe and hassle-free one.

1. A Car in Good Working Order

First and foremost, you should never set out on a long road trip with a car that’s in anything less than perfect working order. Have your car checked out by a mechanic, get an oil change, install LED driving lights, and fill your windshield wiper fluid before hitting the road.
The more reliable your car, the safer you’ll be, and the fewer problems you’ll encounter along the way.

2. A Clean Car

You may be able to handle a little chaos and clutter on your short everyday drives around town, but fail to clean your car out before leaving for a long road trip, and you’ll soon find yourself going crazy in the filthy, confined quarters that is your home away from home for days on end.

Take the time to dispose of those old food wrappers and vacuum the dog hair off the seats before you leave. This way, you’ll feel far more comfortable on your trip. Spills, crumbs, stains, dirt, and mud are just some of the elements you’d like to avoid to keep your car clean. Road trips can get messy, especially when you’re eating in the car or you’ll be walking on muddy or dusty places. Keep your car clean by getting a sturdy, tailor-made floor mat to protect your car from unwanted tarnishes. It will keep your car in pristine condition and looking fresh for years to come.

3. A Plan – Albeit a Flexible One

Every successful road trip begins with a plan. The key, however, is to be flexible in that plan because as everyone knows, most road trips never play out as imagined.

Even if you haven’t watched National Lampoons Vacation, you probably know that anything can happen on a road trip, especially when blinking construction signs are the norm on modern highways.

Make a plan, but keep in mind that anything can happen to put you behind schedule, so just go with it. Google is your friend on the road, so keep your phone charged in case things don’t go as expected.

4. Entertainment

Today’s radio isn’t as satisfying as it used to be, especially when apps like Spotify and Pandora allow you to customize your listening preferences. So, be sure your phone is loaded with your favorite entertainment to make the drive more enjoyable.

If you’re driving your own car, it’s likely you already have a charger on hand, but if you’re renting a car or you’re a passenger in someone else’s, be sure you have the means to keep your phone charged at all times.

5. A Roadside Rescue Service

No-one likes to think about it, but getting stranded on the side of the road is something that can and does happen at the most inopportune times. Being able to dial that 800-number and get a tow truck and mechanic organized will save you a lot of hassle and worry. It will also keep you safe from many of the dangers associated with road trip travel.

Heading out on a road trip is exciting, but it’s important to be prepared. From making sure your car is in good working order to organizing roadside assistance and plenty of entertainment, there are some key things you should do before hitting the highway. Use the list above to make sure you’ve covered all your bases, so your upcoming travels turn out to be the road trip of a lifetime.
