Storage and Organization Tips to Truly Maximize Your Closet Space

September 15, 2019 by Sam H.

Storage and Organization Tips to Truly Maximize Your Closet SpaceDid you know that the average American woman has 103 items of clothing in her wardrobe?

That’s right — and we’re all guilty of buying clothes we don’t strictly need from time to time, leading to all kinds of closet chaos.

Having an overfilled, messy closet just isn’t fun. It makes finding an outfit to wear a stressful experience, increases your chances of losing your favorite items, and just makes your space look untidy.

If going to your closet currently strikes fear into your heart, don’t despair.

Keep reading for the genius closet organization tips you never knew you needed.

Install a Vertical Shoe Rack

If you have more clothes than shoes, you can end up with footwear scattered all over the floor of your closet, which isn’t ideal.

Install a vertical shoe rack in the space at the end of your closet, taking down some of the clothes on hangers if necessary.

This makes it easy to view and access your shoes, and they won’t be in a pile squashing each other. You can also use the compartments for accessories and bedding if you don’t have enough shoes to fill them all.

Use Floor Space for Storage Boxes

Instead of having random stuff loose on the floor of your closet, invest in some stackable storage boxes.

This makes great use of otherwise dead space without creating a huge mess. Clear boxes make it easy to see exactly what you have inside.

Storage boxes are ideal for items you don’t need to access very often, like bedding, clothes that aren’t in season, and one-off accessories.

Hammer in Nails to Hang Jewelry

Need a good place to keep jewelry without it becoming a tangled nightmare?

Hammer a selection of nails at different heights inside your closet and use them to hang necklaces, bracelets, and rings. To store earrings, place them in small organza bags and then hang up using ribbon.

This creates a really cute feature and makes great use of otherwise empty space. If you aren’t handy with a hammer, you could use a small over-door rail or set of hooks instead.

Store Accessories in Wicker Baskets

Wicker baskets are the best way to store accessories that you need to access regularly.
Place baskets along the shelves inside your closet to keep everything looking neat, tidy, and organized.

If you’re going for a minimalist style, limit yourself to one accessory per basket to stop things getting cluttered. If you have too much stuff to do that, group accessories by type or style instead.

Having your closet properly organized gives you time to get around to other household tasks, whether it’s arranging to service your fridge or finally cleaning up your yard.

Where to Find More Organization Tips

If reading these awesome organization tips left you hungry for more, there are plenty of places to get ideas. Search closet organization on social media, YouTube, or Pinterest, or pick up a home magazine at the store for loads of great advice.

Organizing my closet is on my list of things to get done this fall and winter. I am going to start by getting rid of clothes that I have not used in years.

My closet could use a makeover. I’d start with a shoe tree.
